High School Softball Update

High School League Update
Senior League Registrations is now open. Players from ages 14 to 16 (as of December 31) may register now at www.molinelittleleague.com through April 24. Come and join the nearly 36 players who have already registered for the upcoming season.

There has been a major change to the Big League (17-18 year old) division and the entire high school program this year. Nearly six months ago, Little League Baseball and Softball Administrators received news that Little League International was dropping the Big League – effective immediately. No room for discussion or extension was provided. The effects of this were damaging to our own baseball and softball programs but were near catastrophic to the surrounding leagues that relied heavily on a mixture of 14-18 year old players to make up a team.

Little League Softball Administrators (LLS) met with many high school coaches on January 7th to discuss the actions of Little League International and to generate ideas on saving the 17-18 year old division. There was some intense discussion and at the conclusion it was decided that some research needed to be done on other available programs.

On February 8, LLS presented Babe Ruth as a preferable program to encompass all high school ages and offer players the ability play until age 19. In order to avoid conflict of interest between Little League International and Babe Ruth, volunteers were needed to run this program and the Executive Board. The Executive Board offered to advise, work with and transfer overall high school registrations to the new program. The coaches received this information and decided to evaluate other options and to potentially create their own league to cover all high school players.

By mid-March, word was received from the high school coaches that there was not enough interest in creating a new league or a Babe Ruth League. Little League Softball is now comprised of six divisions compassing prekindergarten through 16 year old players and a new exploratory registration (17-18 Big League) for Babe Ruth has been opened by Moline Little League to see if there are players and parents willing to help to establish a new league.
