Tryouts and Draft

  • Who must tryout?
Players who are League Age 8 or older, must tryout/be evaluated in order to be placed on a team.  Tryouts will take place January 13th &14th from 9am to 4pm.  Players are evaluated on their abilities to throw, hit and run.  Please note:  All players will be placed on a team regardless of their performance at tryouts.
  • What is the draft?
After tryouts, managers of each division (Minor B and up) participate in a Player Draft Night.  The draft helps the League form balanced teams and ensure that players are selected in divisions with other players of similar ability.  At the draft, managers first draw a random order and then draft their teams in a serpentine fashion.  For example, whoever has the last pick in the first round, will get the first pick in the second round and so forth.  The highest division drafts first (usually Majors) and is followed by the next lower division on the following night.  Any player not selected in a draft is automatically placed in the draft for the next (lower) division on a subsequent night.
  • Can players be protected?
Players may not be protected by managers, with the exception of their own children. The children of any assistant coaches must be selected during the draft or traded for on draft night.
  • In which division will my player be placed?
The divisions in which players will be drafted depends on each individual player. Players with advanced ability may be selected for the highest division that they are eligible to play. For example, a League-Age 8 player first becomes eligible during the Minor B draft.  The majority of league-age 8 players will be drafted into Minor B.  However, there might be a small group of players that need more development, remain undrafted and are then placed in the Minor C division. This arrangement gives each child the greatest opportunity to develop during the season.

Wee-Ball & Tee-Ball Divisions:
League Ages 4-6. The Wee-Ball & Tee-Ball divisions promote non-competitive, instructional baseball and should be viewed as such by managers, coaches, parents, and fans. The emphasis is on having fun and developing basic skills for all players. Weekly games include three innings of “baseball” in which all players have a turn to bat and run the bases. Neither score nor standings are recorded, and there are no playoffs. Lower Tee-Ball players will hit off a stationary tee for the entire season, while Upper Tee-Ball players will hit off a stationary tee for the first half of the season and face live pitching from coaches during the second half.

Farm Division:
League Ages 6-8*. The Farm division promotes non-competitive, instructional baseball and should be viewed as such by managers, coaches, parents, and fans. The emphasis is on having fun and continuing skill development for all players. Neither score nor standings are recorded, and there are no playoffs. Batters will face soft toss pitching from coaches during the entire season.

Minor C:
League Ages 7-9*. While the Minor C division is primarily instructional baseball and continuing skill development for all players, “friendly” competition is encouraged in the context of teaching the game. This level is also a transitional division of sorts in that batters will face live pitching from fellow players assisted by coach pitch in the event of a walk.

Minor B:
League Ages 8-10*. The playing rules for the Minor B division conform to the annual “Official Regulation and Playing Rules” for Little League Baseball with some modifications or additions as documented in the OVLL Local Rules. The top two teams will move on to the District 62 Tournament of Champions.

Minor A:
League Ages 9-11*. The playing rules for the Minor A division conform to the annual “Official Regulation and Playing Rules” for Little League Baseball with some modifications or additions as documented in the OVLL Local Rules. The top two teams will move on to the District 62 Tournament of Champions. All-Star teams will also be selected to participate in the All-Stars Tournament.

Majors:
League ages 11-12.The playing rules for the Majors division conform to the annual “Official Regulation and Playing Rules” for Little League Baseball with some modifications or additions as documented in the OVLL Local Rules. The top two teams will move on to the District 62 Tournament of Champions. All-Star teams will also be selected to participate in the All-Stars Tournament.

*The League Ages listed above for Farm through Minor A divisions are approximations. Actual placement may vary depending on abilities and where players are chosen in the draft.
