Importance of forming teams in Fall

One of the benefits of being a part of a team that plays competitive ball is that they form in the fall and they stay together all year. From the fall they form, into the end of the summer the following year, they are together. Most times if the players and parents are happy, that team stays together for many years. Sometimes the entire youth sports experience.

They train together in the winter and come out ready to compete in the spring. By the time most leagues are forming their teams, the competitive team has bonded. Having had their team for seven to eight months (depending). Parents also develop deeper relationships as well. For the players who are not playing year round, this will put them in an advantages position when they play against their competition (teams recently formed).

A key variable that can be overlooked during spring or summer season - trust. When I coach the intermural season it takes the kids almost the entirety of the season for them to completely trust me. By trust I mean - Stealing bases (even if they think they're going to get out), making changes to their approach, or making the throw trying to tag out a runner. All of it hinges on trust. Trust that I will not put them in an embarrassing situation. Trust that if they make a mistake I'm not going to be mad at them. This trust is earned over the course of time.

These are the reasons we believe in having our try-outs now in August/September for all our divisions and skill levels.
