Which One?

Which do you like better, hockey or lacrosse?

That’s the question posed to me as I leaned against a rail at a lacrosse clinic.

And then it hit me this player was a Yeti and she did not know who I am and what I stand for.The answer is lacrosse, despite the Wild hat I was wearing that evening.   For me growing up, neither was an option as I grew up in a place that had neither.  My second option is baseball, the sport I came to love watching as a kid, and Yeti will likely get used to seeing me in Cubs hats and tees all summer and fall.  It does help that the Yeti and the Cubs both sport blue so it seems like a solid fashion choice.

For Brad, he grew up following basketball intensely with a smattering of baseball.  Though Daniel questions the baseball claim based on his fantasy baseball records.

Carrie followed professional wrestling!  So if Yeti players come home applying flying arm bars or leg drops…you should discuss these techniques with her.

Here are things that you and your players need to know about the Yeti coaching staff who occasionally wear misleading hats:

Yeti Coaches are Women’s Lacrosse Coaches
:  The Yeti coaches have a variety of experiences working with and coaching kids.  But none of the staff played or coaches boys’ lacrosse.  In fact it is Carrie that has seen the most boys’ lacrosse, likely tenfold, as a parent.  Yeti coaches are not trying to translate the boys’ game into the womens’ game and they are not trying to put the boys’ game into a girl context.  This also means that male coaches always use womens’ sticks and players are taught skills that aid them in the fast-paces womens’ game.

Yeti Coaches are Students
:  The coaching staff is constantly educating themselves on the women’s game and how to be better coaches.  The staff includes a U.S. Lacrosse Level 2 Certified Coach and two U.S. Lacrosse Level 3 Certified Coaches.  These certifications are not common among lacrosse coaches in Minnesota.  And each coach put numerous hours into gaining their certification solely to increase their lacrosse knowledge and better serve their players.  Additionally, the staff is constantly attending clinics, sitting through webinars, talking with other coaches and reading books to improve as coaches.

Yeti Coaches are Teachers: Games are fun!  But Yeti coaches have a focus on practice.  In a game the role of a coach is limited.  You cannot ask a referee to stop everything so you can talk through a situation and walk through the strengths, weaknesses and corrections in the middle of a running clock.  But in practices, Yeti coaches will constantly be teaching about what lacrosse plays are and how to strengthen individual and team skills.  If it is raining, there will likely still be practice unless there is lightning.  Every coach understands the greatest impact they can have on a player is in practice opportunities, and we are hard-pressed to surrender those even to Mother Nature. This also means that scrimmages will be rare, 1 ball and 24 girls is not a favorable teaching equation, and focus will put on drills that allow numerous kids develop a skill with repetitions.

Wrestler Hulk Hogan used to urge kids to take their vitamins!  And while Yeti coaches will urge players to work hard and take their lacrosse vitamins, our coaches will also as they are committed to committed kids.
