Divisions of Play

Greenville Little League currently offers Spring and Fall programs for T-ball, CP Prep, Coach Pitch, Minor, Major, Junior, and Senior League divisions of baseball and softball.  All players ages 4-6 who are starting out with the sport will participate in the T-Ball or CP Prep divisions.  Players ages 7 and up may choose between baseball and softball divisions.  All baseball divisions are coed.  Softball is only offered for girls at this time.  A quick description of each division can be found below.

T-Ball
League Ages 4-5
Intended for our newest and youngest players, the T-Ball division focuses on teaching the game of baseball and softball, and preparing the players for the next levels of the sport.  Players will learn hitting, fielding, base-running, and sportsmanship.
  • No game scores are kept.  There are no season standings, nor participation in the post-season tournament.
  • No player evaluations.  Teams are formed by the League.
  • Batters will hit exclusively off a batting tee, and the game is played with a Sof-T baseball
  • All players will bat each inning
  • Roster sizes will remain small to allow for more on-field participation.
  • Scheduled events will consist of a 30-minute practice followed immediately by a 1-hour game.
  • Regular season events will largely take place on Saturday.

CP Prep
League Age 6
The Coach Pitch ("CP") Prep division provides young players an opportunity to continue development in the fundamentals, while introducing an element of competition.  The CP Prep division prepares players for the Coach Pitch division that they will participate in starting at the age of 7, and is great for young players who have progressed beyond the lessons of T-Ball.  Players in this division will learn fielding their position, the rules of the game, and how to hit live pitching.
  • Players will be assigned to teams/coaches randomly. They will not participate in player evaluations.
  • Batters receive up to 6 pitches, thrown by their coach. If they do not hit the sixth pitch, it will be considered a strike-out.
  • Game is played with a regulation baseball.
  • Spring and Fall game times are typically 5:30 on weekdays
  • In the Spring season, all teams will participate in a single elimination tournament at the end of the season.

Coach Pitch
League Ages 7-8
This division of play builds on the fundamentals that players received in T-Ball.  It is also a good age group for new players of the sport to begin participating.  Players will continue to develop in baseball/softball, social and leadership skills.
  • During Spring play, game scores and season standings are kept.
  • Participation in the Spring post-season tournament
  • Game play consists of a maximum of 6 innings, if time permits
  • Players receive up to 6 pitches, thrown by their coach.
  • A maximum of 10 hitters will bat each inning
  • Otherwise, normal baseball rules apply
  • Spring and Fall game times are typically 6:45 on weekdays
  • Players are eligible to participate in Little League All-star Tournaments after the Spring season

Minors
League Ages 9-10
Once players reach the Minors division, they will likely understand the fundamentals of the sport, and will receive further instruction and development in the next-tier elements of the game.  In this division, players will begin to pitch, field the catcher position, and steal bases.
  • With a few exceptions, traditional game rules apply
  • During Spring play, game scores and season standings are kept.
  • Participation in the Spring post-season tournament
  • Game play consists of a maximum of 6 innings, if time permits
  • A maximum of 5 runs can be scored per inning, for the first 5 innings.
  • Spring and Fall game times are typically 5:30 on weekdays
  • Players are eligible to participate in Little League All-star Tournaments after the Spring season

Majors
League Ages 11-12
The oldest of our Spring Little League players participate in the Majors division.  At this stage, Little League play very closely mirrors "real" baseball or softball.  Players will receive coaching and assistance on the advanced elements of the game.  Following their years in Majors, players will look to enter Junior/Senior divisions of play, or will participate in their Middle School programs.
  • With a few exceptions, traditional game rules apply
  • During Spring play, game scores and season standings are kept.
  • Participation in the Spring post-season tournament
  • Spring and Fall game times are typically 7:00 on weekdays
  • Players are eligible to participate in the Little League "All-star" Tournaments after the Spring season

Junior League/Senior League
League Ages 12-14 (Juniors) and 13-16 (Seniors)
The upperclassmen of our players participate in the Junior or Senior League divisions.  These games are played on full-sized fields, and introduce elements of the game not seen in the younger Little League divisions.  This level of play allows for leads by base runners, pick-offs and balks by the pitchers, and designated hitters.  Junior and Senior League give players a great opportunity to prepare for middle school seasons or get a second/third season once school is over.
  • Traditional game rules apply.  Little League pitch counts and days of rest must be adhered to.
  • Full-sized fields (i.e.  60' mounds, 90' base paths, 300+' fences for baseball)
  • During Spring play, game scores and season standings are kept.
  • Spring and Fall game times are typically 7:00 on weekdays
  • Players are eligible to participate in Little League All-star Tournaments after the Spring season
