U10 Rockets open up with a Win in Westford A/B

The U10 Rockets traveled North to Westford this Sunday to play their first official game of the year. They walked away with a well earned 20-0 win.

The first Quarter offense opened up early with a big 25 yard run by Ty Nicholas on a hand-off from Kobe Johnson. This one unfortunately got called back due to a holding penalty. Penalties seemed to plague the Rockets all game long. The first Quarter was also highlighted by strong runs by not only Ty Nicholas (who added another 45 yard burst) but also by brother Devin Nicholas, Kobe Johnson and Jared Frazier. The Rockets controlled the ball the majority of the first Q and the Rocket defense held Westford to mostly short yardage gains and no points. Q1 closed with the scoreboard reading 0-0.

The start of Q2 saw the duo of Kobe Johnson and Ty Nicholas pick up where they left off with a 5 yard run for a touchdown. A missed extra point kept the score 6-0. Stifling Rocket defense again took over with great open field tackling by Devin Nicholas and the combo of Adam Cheverie and Callan Mackey teaming up for a tackle resulting in a 5 yard loss and a turnover on downs by Westford. Rocket Black Offense took over and although there were several strong drives and great blocking by Jacob Seery, Sam Alberts, John Doherty, Bryce Hunt and Max Donegan the Rockets couldn’t score again in the first half. The first half was also highlighted by a fantastic sack of the QB by Dylan St. Hilaire causing a fumble and recovery by Jake Evans.

The start of the 2nd half saw Callan Mackey rush to break up a pass that would have seen the Knights likely go the distance and Devin Nicholas nearly intercepting a ball on 4th down. On the next offensive drive Kobe Johnson passed to Ty Nicholas who scrambled 65 yards through traffic to score a huge touchdown. The extra point by Ty made the score 13-0 with 8:23 remaining in Q3. Great defensive tackles by Callan Mackey, Jake Evans, Danny Fitzgerald and Kaden McNeice helped keep Westford from the endzone all Quarter and the combo of Chase Williams to Jared Frazier resulted in ultiple first down gains for the Rockets.

Q4 started off with 4 Rockets breaking through the Knights O-line quickly and tackling the Westford RB behind the line of scrimmage for a 10 yard loss. The icing on the cake came when Callan Mackey then stepped in front of a pass to pick off the Westford QB and sprint for a 15 yard pick-6! The extra point by Chase Williams brought the score to 20-0. Lock down defense again hallmarked Q4 for the Rockets with great tackles for losses by Nick Marrangoni and a stripped ball turnover by Jared Frazier. Strong support for the Rockets win was given by Jacob Bradshaw (who was on IR) all game long. Teamwork and effective tackling by several other Rockets helped keep Westford to no points and sealed the victory for Reading. The team should be proud of their effort and 1-0 start to the season.
