Frequently Asked Football Questions (FAQ)


Who can play football for WAYFC?
Children who are residents of the West Allegheny School District and entering grades K-6 for the upcoming season may participate in our WAYFC programs.

What are the age requirements for football in WAYFC?
A. Division I – 5 th & 6th grade division. Any child who turns 13 prior to July 1st of the current year will be ineligible to play in the WPYFL.
B. Division II – 3 rd & 4th grade division. Any child who turns 11 prior to July 1st of the current season must move up to Division I.
C. Division III – K - 2 nd grade division. Any child who turns 9 prior to July 1st of the current season must move up to Division II. A child must be enrolled in kindergarten to be eligible to play. 


What are the weight requirements for football in WAYFC?
There is no maximum weight limit for participation in the WPYFL, however, there shall be weight limitations pertaining to all “skill” positions handling the ball (QB, RB, WR, TE).
Weight limitations are as follows:
1. Division I (5th & 6th Grade) – 120 lbs.
2. Division II (3rd & 4th Grade) – 100 lbs.
3. Division III (K - 2 nd Grade) – 75 lbs.

What is the Junior Varsity (JV) Game Concept?
All teams within Division I and Division II play a Varsity Game and a Junior Varsity (JV) game throughout the regular season, and potentially playoffs. The JV games are intended to provide maximum playing time for players that may have limited playing time during the Varsity game due to inexperience, athleticism or learning a new position. All players play on game day. 

When do practices start?
Practices generally start the last Monday of July or the first Monday of August. Teams can practice a maximum of 8 hours per week until the season starts. After the 1st game of the season each team can practice a maximum of 6 hours per week including through the playoffs and Superbowl. Optional conditioning or camps may be held in July.

When does the season begin and end?
The season generally starts the third weekend of August with an exhibition game and the regular season games end generally the second weekend of October. Playoffs generally start the third weekend of October and end with the Super Bowl around the first weekend of November. The WPYFL hosts a Senior Bowl the weekend following playoffs for all 6th grade athletes.

What equipment will I need to purchase?
The following equipment is recommended and will need to be purchased for each player:
7 Pad Integrated Football Pants for practice
5 Pad Football Shirt
5 Pad Football Girdle (Optional)
Football Cleats (Molded)
Chin Strap (Schutt & Riddell helmets only)
Mouth Guard with tether
Knee High Socks (Color TBD by Coach)

The following equipment is provided by the WAYFC organization:
Helmet
Shoulder Pads
Game Jersey
Game Pants
Practice Jersey

What does my registration fee cover? 
Registration fees cover a variety of expenses including, but not limited to: 
Uniform purchases/maintenance
Equipment (helmets, shoulder pads, mats, tackling pads, portable radios, etc)
Music Rights (for half time routines)
Cheer Camp
