Adam Leyland

Adam 'Gaff' Leyland


Adam (Gaff) Leyland, Director of Coaching. Gaff, was the Director for Clackamas United and is currently the Varsity Coach for the LaSalle Girls. In addition he has coached many very successful girls teams at Southside, THUSC, and Crossfire. He is an experienced leader, progressive, and supports our mission and vision of continuing to build a strong community within the Eastside Timbers Football Club.


Gaff will have the overall responsibilities to insure the growth and development of Eastside Timbers as we reach out to the East County to give more children the opportunity to play the game and be an integral part of the Eastside Timbers Football Club Family.

Zane Fernandez - Head Coach

Coach Zane has been with Eastside Timbers since the inception of  the club.  Zane began playing recreational soccer for the club and later transitioned into the competitive side.  Zane competed with Eastside Newcastle and was a State Champion.  After his playing career, Zane began coaching in  2012 and has been doing it ever  since.  Zane is helped begin Oregon Premier Futsal and now currently serves as the General Manager.  Zane and his futsal teams have won Bronze and Silver medals at the Futsal national championships. 

Joe Berninghausen - Assistant Coach

Coach Joe has been with Eastside Timbers for over 10 years.  Joe currently assists with our G01 Red team but is also working with all of our club’s goalkeepers and improving their abilities.  Joe has worked with several different high school teams, Thorns RTC, and the Western Oregon University’s Women’s program.  Joe is continuing his coaching education and is excited about his continued role in supporting our G01s and club goalkeepers. Joe also attended Western Oregon University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education.  When he isn’t coaching with Eastside, Joe works as an Assistive Technology Assistant in Special Education for the Gresham-Barlow School District

Sharla Topaum - Head Coach

Coach Sharla has been with Eastside Thorns FC for over 10 years. As a young player growing up in Canada, Sharla played her way through the competitive youth levels in British Columbia, Nova Scotia, and Alberta. In college, she played as a starter at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT). After moving to the United States in 1998, Sharla hung up her boots to focus on her graduate studies, earning a Master of Science degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences from Portland State University. 

Sharla is currently the Timbers and Thorns Regional Training Center (RTC) Director and is also an Oregon ODP Coach.  In her coaching career, Sharla’s club teams have achieved a tremendous amount of success in several tournaments around the Northwest.  Sharla’s teams have also advanced to the state cup semifinals in 2017 & 2018, was a state cup finalist in 2015, and were back-to-back state cup champions in 2012 and 2013.   When Sharla is not coaching Eastside or RTC, she is a Speech-Language Pathologist for the Centennial School District.  Sharla also has two daughters who both competed with the Eastside Thorns program.

Peter Greenfield - Assistant Coach

Coach Peter has been with Eastside Thorns FC for over 10 years on both the recreational and competitive sides.  As a player, Peter competed at the collegiate level and was also a successful lacrosse player before injuries prevented him from competing at the next level.  Peter quickly transitioned into coaching and never turned back.  Coach Peter worked as a speed and agility trainer at Arizona State University with the lacrosse program before venturing up to the Northwest to work with youth soccer.  Peter also has one daughter who competes with Eastside Thorns FC.

Ryan Schwoeble

Ryan Schwoeble - Head Coach

Hometown: Pittsburg, Pennsylvania 
Coaching License: USSF D – USC Advanced Regional & GK Level 2 Diploma

Ryan comes from Pittsburgh, PA where as a player, he was a part of the Region I ODP team and played two years at Point Park University. Ryan also had residency with the U-17 National Team at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL, and with Watford F.C. in Watford, Hertfordshire, England. As a coach, Ryan spent two seasons coaching for the Adidas 1898 Academy at the historic Beadling Soccer Club (Pittsburgh, PA). He also has coached as an assistant at Upper St. Clair High School (Pittsburgh, PA) for 10 seasons, accomplishing two state championships and the program's fourth NSCAA High School National Championship. Ryan spent 6 seasons as a Professional USSF National Referee before retiring at the end of the 2013 season.

Carly Copplestone

Carly Copplestone - Head Coach


Carly comes to EastSide Timbers from England where she was a Physical Education teacher for 10 years. She has always loved the game of soccer and played for Barking Ladies FC, a senior women's side that has competed at Step 2 of English Women's Soccer for 10 years. Carly's leadership skills were recognized in 2013 when the club offered her a player/coach role for the 2013-14 season. This was a position she relished and lead the team to the County Cup Finals for the first time in a decade. After this, Carly was asked to join CK Basildon FC, which plays in the Premier League. After changing playing position she played for one year but then had to retire due to injury.


Carly's ultimate dream was always to be able to coach in the US. After her soccer career in England ended, she focused on coaching and made the move to Portland. Prior to coming to Portland, Carly coached at the prestigious Elite Soccer camps in Boston for three years then for the No Tippy Tappy organization in Guelph and Rockwood, Canada. Carly is also one of the Assistant Coaches and the Community Youth Development Coach for the Portland Thorns.

Maddy Barbarino - Assistant Coach

Coach Maddy is now entering her 2nd year with the club.  Maddy is currently the G04 Red assistant coach, but Maddy has a wealth of experience coaching at the collegiate level with Multnomah Univeristy and Nyack College.  She has also worked with the Nyack High School girls program, Rockland  FC, and Ramapo Valley SC.  As a player, Maddy played goalkeeper for Nyack College.

Andrew Toth - Head Coach

Coach Andrew has been a part of Eastside Timbers for over 14 years. He has also coached outside the club with multiple middle school soccer programs, as well as the Barlow High School girls program.  Andrew currently holds a USSF Grass Roots license and is looking to continue his coaching education.  Coach Andrew and his teams have won 2 Clash of the Border titles and 1 Beaverton Cup title. His daughter is currently competing with the G03 Red team and when he is not coaching with the club, he is a PE teacher at Reynolds Middle School.  Coach Andrew has played the game of soccer for over 44 years and his primary position was Centerback.

Scotty Baxter - Head Coach

Coach Scotty has just come aboard the Eastside Thorns FC staff this season.  Scotty has coached for several different programs across the country including Jackson College, Chelsea High School (MI), and FC United (IL).  In his playing career, Scotty was primarily a Goalkeeper who competed with International All Stars, Wooster FC, Franklin College SC, and Escola Graduada de Sao Paulo.  Scotty attended Ohio University and currently has a Master’s Degree in Recreation and Sport Sciences.  When Scotty is not coaching, he is the Head Coach of the DeLaSalle Northside Catholic High School Girls Soccer team and is also a Media and Marketing Professional.

Todd Saks

Todd Saks - Assistant Coach

Coach Todd has been coaching youth soccer for over 24 years, and has been working with Eastside Thorns FC for over 11 years.  Todd played his collegiate soccer at Oregon State University.  After his playing career concluded, he took his playing experiences and transferred it over into coaching and education to help  youth  players achieve their goals. Todd and his teams have won the U18 OPL State Cup, U14 Presidents Cup, and the 4A State Cup Championship for Centennial High School.  Outside of Eastside Thorns FC, Todd is currently the Centennial Boys high school coach and has been a 6th grade teacher for Centennial School district for over 24 years.  Todd’s daughter also competes for the G05 Eastside Thorns Red team.

Mike Drennan - Head Coach

Coach Mike has been with the club for over 3 years now.  As a player, Mike grew up and played for Eastside predecessor clubs 3 Rivers United and West Villa.   Mike still plays today in the adult outdoor and indoor local leagues.  Mike was primarily played as a midfielder or right/left defender.  As a coach, Mike has been coaching the game for over 9 years with Clackamas United, PDP, and our Winter Academy program.  Mike has a daughter who currently competes with Eastside Thorns as well. 

Staci Tatum - Assistant Coach

Coach Staci is has been with Eastside Timbers since she was 5 years old. Staci played at the recreational level, progressed to the competitive level, and competed at the collegiate level with Warner Pacific College.  At Warner, Staci was a 4 year starter, NAIA Scholar athlete from 2015-2017, and was an All-conference member in 2016 & 2017.  After competing at the collegiate level, she transitioned to Futsal where she currently competes at the professional level.   Staci is also working at Gresham High School where she is coaching at the JV and Varsity level.

Chris Keegan - Assitant Coach

Coach Chris has been with Eastside Timbers for 9 years.  Chris is a fantastic sports coach in general as he also coaches youth basketball and youth baseball, alongside soccer.  Chris has two sons who have competed with Eastside Timbers and both have had a tremendous amount of success.  One is currently playing at Corban University, and the other son has been competing with the Timbers Academy for the past 3 years.  Coach Chris is now an assistant on his daughter’s team.  When he is not coaching, he works in a sales leadership role in the food distribution industry.

Christian Stavig - Head Coach

Coach Christian has been with our club for over 2 years, but has been a youth coach for more than 7 years.  Soccer has played a big part of Christian’s life, as he has been playing and coaching at various levels of the game for over 38 years.  When Christian was competing as a player, he primarily played Forward or Winger.  Christian’s teams have had some success in 2017 when they took home the Beaverton Cup and the Bend Premier Cup.  Christian’s coaching philosophy is to create a fun and safe environment to learn new skills, challenge their boundaries, make friends, and create a foundation for lifelong health and wellness.

Brandon Tatum

Brandon Tatum played has played a big role in our club’s success his entire playing and coaching career.  As a player, Brandon was a State Cup Champion in 2004 with Eastside Liverpool and was also a State Cup finalist with Eastside Roma.  Brandon went on to compete with Warner Pacific as a right back earning All-confernce recognition.  As a coach, Brandon was the assistant coach with the G04 Red team who were back-to-back State Cup Champions in 2017 &  2018.  Brandon Tatum’s sister, Staci, is also a coach for Eastside Thorns FC and also works with Brandon as a staff coach at Gresham High School.  Brandon’s mother, Jackie Tatum, served as a club board member for 10 years on the recreational and competitive program.

Doug Pham - Head Coach

Coach Doug has been with the club since 2016.  Doug grew up competing with FC Portland, Oregon ODP, and went to Willamette University to play for the men’s program.  When Doug is not coaching for Eastside, he is Federal Government Attorney.  Doug has 5 kids who compete with Eastside Timbers and Eastside Thorns FC.

Tiffany Whitcher - Head Coach

Coach Tiffany has been with Eastside Thorns FC for about 3 years.  Tiffany grew up competing at J.B. Geoff Walker - Assistant Coach

Coach Geoff has been with Eastside Timbers for 4 years.  Geoff has a wealth of coaching experience coaching at the high school level, all the way down to the micro soccer level.  Geoff has competed at every level over the course of his 35-year playing career, including the professional level.  He still plays today in the local soccer leagues.  Geoff has two  girls  who compete with Eastside Thorns FC. Outside of soccer,  Geoff runs two service departments in the Tonkin organization, Gladstone Kia,  and Gladstone Hyundai.  Geoff and his wife enjoy working with their daughters’ teams and creating long-lasting soccer memories.

Greg Pfleger - Head Coach

Coach Greg has been a soccer coach for over 25 years now and has been with our club for a little over 1 year.  As a player, Greg played 4 years at George Fox University.  After his collegiate career concluded, Greg went on to compete at the professional ranks with Cascade Surge, Yakima Reds, and Portland Pythons.  As a coach, Greg and his teams have won a Washington State Cup championship, 2 Oregon State Cup championships as an assistant, and won the Surf Cup in 2016.   When Greg is not coaching at Eastside, he is the owner of West Coast Soccer Labs,  a company that specializes in state of the art technological that enhances technical training.  Greg has 3 daughters,  one of which is currently competing with Eastside Thorns FC.
