Results From Opening Day

Blue Jays 8  Devils 6

The Blue Jays started the season short handed but got key contributions from every one of the 10 players available.  The infield played a strong game with Del Kates, Jim Klemick, Jeff Blank and Mark Jerden all making the plays needed to shut down the Devils offense.  The Devils had opportunities to score in several innings but the birds defense tightened up, stranding Ken Reiss on third after a lead off triple, getting out of a bases loaded one out situation, and getting out of the sixth inning with the tying runs on second and third.  The outfield also came through when called on with Scott Comer and Bob Dolan running down fly balls.

Jim O'Brien led the Jay's offense with 4 hits (triple) and 3 runs scored.  Scott Comer and Jeff Blank chipped in with 3 hits each.  Tom Sikora, Mark Jerden, Bob Doernberg and Jim Klemick all chipped in with 2 hits.  Jim Swiderski had a short sac fly with an aggressive baserunning nod going to Jeff Blank, and Jim also forced a runner out at home.  The only downside to the Blue Jays win is that the team played so well I have absolutely nothing sarcastic to write.

The Devils first game was not their finest on defense, but kudos to Kevin Culp who pitched a great game, and went 2-3.  Tom Reither went 3-3 with 2 triples. Ken Reiss went 3-3 as well.  Defense is the name of the game and the Devils came up short today……

Flames 9  Wildcats 6

The Flames were on fire for six innings and survived smoldering in the seventh inning holding on for a 9-6 win over the Wildcats.  The defense was stellar early with Gene Harris turning multiple doubleplays from his shortfield position and strong pitching from Norm Derry.  Offensively eight Flames scored runs led by leadoff batter Derek Foster scoring twice.  Thirteen players had hits with Gene Corrado, Aaron Sacharov, and Carl Weigand having two hits each.  Carl also had a double and Kevin Grevera smashed a triple into left center field.  The Wildcats made it a game despite being short handed by scoring 6 runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Starr 18  Wolfpack 1

Starr started the season with leadoff hitter, Larry Levin, hitting an inside the park home run for our first of 18 runs. Starr took a 2 to 0 lead after 1 inning. They tacked on 17 more runs for a final score of 18 to 1. A couple of injuries early in the game hurt the Wolfpack which resulted in a lopsided score. Each pitcher walked one batter each. Hitting stars for the Starr team were Larry Levin going 4 for 5 with a homerun, 2 triples and a double with 6 RBIs and 4 runs scored. Also with 4 hits were Terry Klein, Ron Fein. Chipping in with 3 hits were Spencer Snyderman, Bill Schwartz. 2 hits by Jack Donahue, Lee Bullman, and Harris Braunstein. Bill Schwartz pitched a complete game walking only 1 batter and earned our first win. Thanks to Charlie Whitaker for filling in for the Wolfpack after an injury.

In the first game of the season the Starr bats caged and overwhelmed the injury depleted Wolfpack team 18-1.. The "Pack" had bases loaded three times but only scored once due to an excellent Starr defense. Many Wolfpack players hit the ball hard but directly at a  Starr player.
Curtis Bragg, Pat O'Mara and Ron Mangini each had two hits in a losing effort.

Eagles 8  Classics 3

Best of luck to all the teams this season.  I hope it will be an enjoyable, safe one.

The Eagles started out by scoring in the first three innings, managing to build a 7-0 lead going into the bottom of the third inning.  The Eagles finished the game with an 8-3 win over the Classics.

The Eagles were led by a true icon, Bill Howland, who not only pitched a complete game but also had four hits including a triple and three singles.  Not bad for someone close to 90 years young.  Babe Ruth used to pitch and hit very well but I think he could never do it at Bill’s age.  Bill is truly remarkable as he can also play other positions in the field.

Other players that contributed with two hits were Ted Henritzy, Ed Brandriff, Mike Kroeger, Judy Agasar and Dave Detwiler.  In addition, Ed Brandriff made a good throw to home plate to throw out a runner and the play was handled very well by Doug Rutter.  Dale Cassidy was a standout at shortstop by making numerous plays throughout the game.  In addition, Dave Detwiler also made good plays at second base for the Eagles.

Tom Boyle pitched a good game with no walks but The Classics defense needs to be sharper.  Paul Stetsko, Tom Jakubowski and John Breig lead the hitting attack with two hits each.  The Classics lost 8-3

Editor's Note:

My cheap Walmart Bird of the month calendar has the Blue Jay featured in May.  If you are playing the Blue Jays
remember this and be afraid.  Be very afraid.  In April the bird of the month was the Great Tit and I have absolutely
nothing to say about that.
