ABOUT

The ACL Prevention Program is Open to all Girls ages 2003 to 1999

Sports Science Development

As they transition through puberty into their teenage years, female athletes have a 4-6 times greater incidence of ACL injury than males. 70% of these injuries occur during an incident that involves no direct contact with another player or object, and often takes place when the athlete is landing, decelerating, or changing direction.  The ACL injury is a particularly traumatic and expensive one that usually requires surgery followed by 9 to 18 months of recovery before a high-confidence return to sport.

Unfortunately female soccer athletes face an exceptionally high risk: An analysis of collegiate soccer players in the 1990's found that 31% of females had an ACL injury, while only 13% percent of males had an ACL injury.   The good news is that  a large amount of medical research has occurred over the last two decades. Currently, there is a better understanding of why female soccer athletes face higher ACL injury risk than males.  Using this body of research, biokinesiology and physical therapy experts have developed training programs specifically for athletes.  These training programs have been shown to reduce the risk of female ACL injury.

In its effort to provide the female soccer player with the best developmental experience Santa Barbara Soccer Club has partnered with Peak Performance Project also known as P3 and Elite Performance and Rehabilitation Center to implement a comprehensive training protocol designed to reduce ACL injury risk.  Peak Performance Project is a world-leading sports science facility and Elite Performance is a state of the art physical therapy clinic. Both are located in Santa Barbara and have worked together for years. The Injury Prevention Program is planned for all girls teams G03 and older. P3 will design and oversee the program and training will be administered by Elite.
