URA Basketball

URA Basketball is open to all Boys and Girls Grade K-12.

URA Basketball is a recreational program – everyone makes a team, no one gets cut.

Registration for the Basketball program generally opens in August.  The season begins in Mid-November, games start in early December and will end just prior to Spring Break.  The season breaks for all school observed holidays.

Players are grouped by Fall school grade.  Time commitment is typically 1 game per week and 1 practice.

Dependent on registration numbers,  we typically have the following divisions (PLEASE NOTE – Girls are welcomed to play in the Boys divisions if preferred):

  • Co-Ed K-1 – Games Saturday Only, no weekday commitment
  • Boys 2-3 – Games Saturday, practice 1x per week
  • Boys 4-5 – Games Saturday, practice 1x per week
  • Boys 6-7 – Games Saturday, practice 1x per week
  • Boys 8-9 – Games Sunday, practice 1x per week
  • Boys 10-12 – Games Sunday, no practices
  • Girls 2-3 – Saturday Games, practice 1x per week
  • Girls 4-5 – Saturday Games, practice 1x per week
  • Girls 6th and up – Saturday or Sunday Games, practice 1x per week

URA Basketball utilizes youth referees for the Co-Ed and the Boys/Girls 2nd and 3rd grade divisions.  In all other divisions we utilize PIAA certified referees (same referees that are certified to officiate high school and college level basketball).  In fact, if you attend the UHS basketball games, you will occasionally see some of the same refs from URA.  In the younger divisions, referees work hard to not just “call the game” but to instruct the players as to what they may have done.

Playing time

It is our intention at URA to support equal playing time for players.  Each division is given guidelines to handle substations during the game.  The substitution rules grid is listed below.

1.     Each player must play two (2) FULL quarters (or the time equivalent). All players must sit out one (1) FULL quarter (unless you have six players or less). Penalty for not following this rule is forfeit of the game.

2.     No one should play all 4 quarters (in part or in whole) until everyone plays 3 full quarters unless you have a rash of injuries.  Below is a table for your reference in regards to number of players in attendance and how many quarters they should play.  For example if you have 7 kids, 6 play 3 qtrs and 1 plays 2.
3.  Time equivalents- coaches can utilize time equivalents to manage playing time.  For example, if each quarter is 10 min long, each player MUST playa total of 20 minutes.
