Who is Charles Albert?

Recently the City of Fernandina Beach posted an article on Mr. Albert on their Facebook page. We are sharing this article with our Elm Street Little League community as we have him to thank for bringing Little League to Amelia Island. Meet Mr. Charles Albert!

For this week's "throwback Thursday" we are highlighting Fernandina's first and only African American Mayor, the Honorable Charles Albert. Mr. Albert sat on the City Commission for eighteen years and served as Mayor in 1978.

1. Mr. Albert grew up in Nassauville where he attended class in a one room schoolhouse and would take his paddleboat into the creek to catch oysters and shrimp for dinner.
2. He carries God in his heart wherever he goes.
3. Mr. Albert met his wife in 6th grade at the Peck School- she’s been the “apple of his eye” ever since.
4. He spent time in Japan serving during the Korean War.
5. His choice for his last meal would be fish and grits.
6. Mr. Albert made $20/week at his job while attending high school before leaving for Edwards Water College and, later, FAMU.
7. Four little ones call him Grandaddy.
8. Mr. Albert remembers being on the campaign trail in the 1970’s when neighborhood children would bring him lemonade on hot days.
9. He founded the Elm Street Little League. The field at the MLK Jr. Rec Center has since been named after Mr. Albert.
10. You won’t catch him dancing anymore- unless it’s Mustang Sally!
