Volunteers & Your Children’s Safety
Little League International requires all leagues and districts in the United States to conduct an annual background check on every volunteer that includes a nationwide criminal search, a search of the National Sex Offender Registry, review of the U.S. Center for SafeSport Centralized Disciplinary Database and the Little League International Ineligible List.
Little League preferred provider J.D Palatine, has a Criminal File database that contains more than 600 million records, including criminal and sex offender registry records covering 50 states and the District of Columbia. This action meets the current Little League Regulation 1(c) 8 & 9 requirement.
Assembly Bill 506, signed into law on September 16, 2021 provides additional requirements for all California youth service organizations. Those additional requirements relate to all volunteers who have direct contact with or supervision of children for more than 16 hours per month or 32 hours per year. Our Board of Directors believes this applies to all managers, coaches, Board of Director members, concession workers, team parents, and others as may be identified.
The additional requirements of AB 506 are:
1. Regular volunteers will complete training in the identification of child abuse and neglect and the subsequent reporting requirements
2. Regular volunteer background checks will include fingerprint scan and include subsequent arrest notification (Live Scan)
3. Each league will develop and implement child abuse prevention policies and procedures to ensure the reporting of suspected incidents of child abuse as part of the ASAP Safety Plan
4. Each league will provide written notice to parents and guardians regarding its policies relative to background checks.
Our league is moving expeditiously to implement these new requirements. In the interim, we continue to submit background checks to J. D. Palatine.
