FURMAN SHOOTS PAST THE CITADEL TO CLAIM NINTH SOCON REGULAR SEASON TITLE

Charleston, S.C. – Furman women's soccer netted four first half goals en route to earning its seventh consecutive victory and a share of its ninth Southern Conference regular season title with a 5-3 triumph over The Citadel Friday afternoon at Washington Light Infantry Field in Charleston, S.C.

The victory improved the Paladins to 12-4-1 overall and 7-0-1 in the SoCon, while The Citadel slipped to 5-9-2 overall and 1-7-0 in the league. Furman captured the SoCon title for the second time in the last three seasons and can secure the No. 1 seed for the upcoming SoCon Women's Soccer Championship with a point versus Mercer in Sunday's regular season finale or a loss by Samford (6-1-1 SoCon) on Sunday versus Chattanooga.

"It's great to see this team's hard work pay off with a ninth league title," said Paladin head coach Andrew Burr. "We were able to get off to a good start and get a road win, but we know there is a lot of work left to do. Our team will rest and recover tonight and tomorrow and get ready to play on Sunday at Mercer."

Jasmine Greene unlocked the Bulldogs defense with a pass thru the center of the field to Charleston, S.C., native Caitlyn Reilly, who rounded the goalkeeper before tapping her shot into an empty net to put the Paladins in front in the 17th minute. Less than four minutes later, Amanda Baker played a ball to the feet of Isabella Gutierrez on the left side of the box and the sophomore curled a shot off the fingertips of the goalkeeper and into the right-hand corner at 20:02 to double the lead.

The Citadel cut the Paladin lead in half at 24:47 when Suzuka Yosue curled a free kick inside the left post. The goal halted Furman's shutout run at 671:56, dating back to a 1-1 draw versus Samford on September 27.

Greene tallied her fourth goal of the season and gave Furman a 3-1 advantage at 27:48 by dribbling past three defenders from the right wing and firing inside the left post. Erin O'Hearn capped the four-goal outburst in the first half by converting at the penalty spot for her sixth goal of the season after The Citadel was whistled for a handball in the box at the 38:06 mark.

Freshman Julia Nicholas added to the Paladins' offensive fireworks in the 54th minute with her first collegiate goal. The Citadel scrambled to clear a Furman shot off of the line, but Nicholas won the clearance and looped a shot into the right-side netting at 53:57 to up the margin to 5-1.

The Citadel put together a late rally as Mel Mikoy connected on a free kick at 68:45 to trim the Paladin lead to 5-2 and Emily Mason laced a shot past Nora Sampson from 22 yards out at 80:04 to provide the final 5-3 scoreline.

Furman managed a 20-7 edge in total shots and 10-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Paladins earned 11 corner kicks without surrendering any to the Bulldogs.

Kellsey Weaver returned to the lineup and picked up the victory in goal, while Sampson saw 33 minutes of action in net. Brie Sikes took the loss for The Citadel after allowing four goals in 39 minutes of play.

The Paladins finish the regular season with a 2 p.m. contest in Macon, Ga., versus the Mercer Bears (13-3-0, 5-2-0 SoCon) on Sunday. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+. Links for the live streams and live statistics can be found at FurmanPaladins.com.
