SOCON CHAMPIONS!!! FURMAN TRIUMPHS OVER SAMFORD IN DOUBLE OVERTIME TO EARN NCAA TOURNAMENT BERTH, 2
Birmingham, Ala. –
Sophomore
Jasmine Greene
scored the "Golden Goal" with just 17 seconds remaining in double overtime to hand Furman its seventh Southern Conference Women's Soccer Championship and eighth NCAA Tournament berth with a 2-1 victory over Samford at the Samford Track & Soccer Complex in Birmingham, Ala., on Friday afternoon.
The Paladins, who remained unbeaten at 8-0-2 on the season, punched their ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015 and will find out their first round opponent during the NCAA Selection Show, which is set to be streamed on NCAASports.com at 1 p.m. on Monday, April 19.
With less than 30 seconds left in the second overtime period and a penalty kick shootout looming on the horizon, Vestavia Hills, Ala., native
Faith Hauberg
intercepted a pass in the defensive third and hammered a long ball down the middle of the field. Greene, a product of nearby Hoover, Ala., flicked the ball forward with a header, spun past her defender and unleashed a shot from near the top of the box that caromed off of Samford goalkeeper Morgan McAslan. The ball bounced directly to Greene who slotted her low shot to the left of McAslan and into the net at the 109:43 for her third goal of the campaign.
"I'm so excited for Furman and for these players," said Paladin head coach
Andrew Burr
, the winningest coach in the history of SoCon women's soccer. "Samford is an outstanding team with tremendous depth, but our team was focused on their goal of winning a championship and was able to go on the road and get the job done."
After a back-and-fourth first half that saw both teams create scoring opportunities,
Julia Nicholas
put the Paladins in front in the 43
rd
minute. Hauberg lofted a long free kick into the middle of the box where Nicholas was able to settle the ball and poke a perfectly placed shot into the left-hand corner at the 42:07 mark for her first goal of the season.
Samford (8-2-3) answered with a goal of its own less than two minutes later. Morgan Green played a cross from the left edge of the box towards the far post and Ella Simpson headed her shot over Furman goalkeeper
Addison Corn
and across the line with one minute left in the half.
The Bulldogs controlled much of the possession in the second half, posting a 10-4 edge in shots, just as they had done in the first half. Corn, who finished the match with 12 saves for Furman, stopped four second half shots, turned away one in the first overtime and two in the second overtime period to earn the victory in goal. Her 12 saves were the most by a Paladin goalkeeper since Jessica Smith stopped 12 shots versus South Carolina in 2010. McAslan totaled five saves for Samford.
The Paladins, who gained a measure of revenge after falling to Samford in last year's tournament final, were outshot 25-11, including 13-7 in shots on target. Furman earned three corner kicks, while Samford was awarded four in the 110-minute battle.
