A League Guidelines

A Division

Overview: There are no team standings or playoffs in the A Division. Players should
understand how to compete, but please do not run-up the scores or limit key
defensive positions to only a few players. The goal at this level is to make players
familiar with basic elements of the game; develop fielding, hitting, and throwing
mechanics; have fun, be safe, and want to return next season. Please refer to ELL
House Rules for more information, or contact your Coordinator for help.

Key coaching items:
Practices should broken down into small groups (3-4 kids) with multiple stations
for hitting/throwing/fielding/baserunning led by different coaches wherever
possible - keep the kids moving by rotating them through stations in small groups.

In games, rotate defensive positions to develop multiple skills and keep all kids
interested – one coach can assist team in the field for the first 4 games of the season.

Teaching safety and awareness is important - no player should touch a bat until they
are hitting; don’t throw the bat; never turn their back on (or look away from) the
ball or a live play; baserunning – how to slide and avoid collisions/obstruction.

Hitting – Swing mechanics are critical at this level. Swings can get “long” against the
pitching machine (leading with the barrel instead of the hands) while still making
contact – teach quick hands/compact swing.

Baserunning –baselines, safety, overrunning first base only, watch the base coaches.

Throwing mechanics – “step, point, & throw”; introduce long-toss.

Ready position in the field and defensive awareness – “Where’s the play?”

Fielding mechanics – ground balls, fly balls, tag & force plays, body positions.

Catchers – familiarize kids with the catching equipment and how to position their
body for safety & effectiveness; identify and encourage multiple kids who are willing
to try catching – they must always wear a cup when catching at games or practice.

At the end of the season, Managers will be required to complete an evaluation for
each player on your team, and your Coordinator will be working with you to assess
your progress in meeting these development goals.

Training and Support:
Please be sure to attend the required Coaches Clinic, CPR/Safety Training, and
Indoor Team Practice Sessions provided by ELL to ensure player development,
safety, and your success as a coach.
Thank you for volunteering to coach and have a great season!
