Ramona Action League is coaching skateboarding at “Pop-up Skateparks” in Ramona!  Registration is open now for the Spring Season where youth aged 6 to 18 will meet for a five-week skateboard clinic at Grace Community Church, located at 1234 Barger Place, Ramona, CA 92065 on Thursdays, from 2:30 to 4:30, starting May 2 through May 30.

League membership includes:

• Access to participating “pop-up skate spots”
• Coaching and mentorship with professional coaches
• Opportunities to demonstrate their skills and compete with peers
• Discounts on boards and gear from select local merchants
• Chance to earn a sponsorship to AM-SLAM regional skateboarding competition series

For our first season, the regular season fee of $85 per athlete will be waived during registration using discount code “28983”. Students can register at http://ramonaskatepark.org/ramona-action-league/.  Reduced price registration for low income participants is made possible under a grant provided by the Ramona Food and Clothes Closet Foundation. The remaining fee waivers are possible through a separate grant.

Skateboarders will start where they are, as beginners, intermediate or advanced and be coached to improve from where they start.  As they progress, athletes will learn more advanced skills and techniques, and coaches can incorporate competition skills, including how to put together a creative routine that scores highly, to impress judges.  Athletes learn to perfect their preferred style of skateboarding and are introduced to new styles.  Promising athletes interested in competition will be sponsored to regional competitions, such as AM-SLAM.

Ramona Action League is already working on a Summer program that will include weekly field trips to skateparks around San Diego County, as well as trips to skateboard competitions with sponsored riders.  Details on the summer program will be announced shortly.

Coach Ryan Wooldridge will be coaching local teen and young adult skateboarders on how to coach skateboarding, so that we can expand the program using local talent. We are thrilled to think that we could provide local employment for teens and young adults, while we nurture a marginalized group of young people in our community.

The pop up skateparks include equipment manufactured by Freshpark, called a “Park-in-a-Cart,” which includes:

• 2 – Quarter pipes
• 6 – Fun Box / Manual Pads
• 2 – Launch Ramps
• 2 – Grind Rails
• 2 – Safety Rail
• 2 – Fun Box / Manual Pad Extension Legs

All foldable and packed away on a rolling 2500lb capacity cart that fits in a horse trailer.  Equipment is provided by Ramona Skatepark Champions under grants provided by the Ramona Community Foundation, and the Modern Woodmen of America.

Safety equipment will be required, and for those who forget theirs, high quality, certified safety gear is available to loan from a program made available by Pro-Tec, leading manufacture of professional grade action sport helmet and pad sets, under grants from Kiwanis of Ramona and Thrivent Financial.
