2022 Season Start

LAHAINA — With spring approaching, and hopefully the end of pandemic restrictions, it is time for all to shout out, “Play ball!”The crisp, springtime air signals the return to the diamond for all ages, but especially for the youngsters yearning for baseball action. And here on the West Side, the West Maui Little League Baseball organization began hitting the fields on Jan. 29.

From the Lahaina Recreation Center fields to Napili Park, 165 girls and boys ages four to 14 have been sharpening their game in practice and for the games that threw out the first pitches two weeks ago.

According to incoming WMLLB President Anastasia Colt, the program will field 14 teams this season, including five in Tee Ball for children 4-6 years old, four in Rookies (ages 7-9 years), two in Minors (9-10), Majors (11-12), and one in Juniors (13-14).Colt added that the Minors, Majors and Junior Division teams will participate in interleague play that will match up teams from WMLLB with Central East Maui, Upcountry and Kihei teams.“This is an exciting aspect for our Little League program,” she said. “Our players travel to the other league’s home field and interact with more of our Maui community. This is a tradition that started last year, and we are happy to continue!”

The 2022 WMLLB Board of Directors includes President Colt, Vice President Meredith Medeiros, Player Agent/Safety Officer John Kim, Secretary Ali Bodick, Treasurer Cheryl Sinogo, Umpire-in-Chiefs Karyn Murphy and Jason Gilbert, and At-large Member and Outgoing President Amy Sharp.

“We thank Amy for her dedication to WMLLB and for helping the new board get a great start to the season. The board also continues to be grateful to work with the County of Maui to adopt a Return to Play Plan that is safe and effective for our keiki to enjoy the sport of baseball,” Colt said.

President Colt added, “This year, our amazing sponsors returned from a year of no fundraising with generous donations, making it possible for us to offer our program at a reasonable rate for all participants and invest in equipment to enhance our 2022 season!”

Sponsors for the 2022 season include The Grand Wailea; Division Sponsors 5A Rent-A-Space, Cool Cats and Captain Jacks, King Screen Painting, Maui Resort Rentals, and Duke’s Beach House; and Team Sponsors MKEX Excavation, Kane’s Legacy Tree Services, Saray Sharvit Photography, and The Snorkel Store.

“West Maui Little League Baseball thanks each of these companies on giving back to our community and supporting our youth,” concluded Colt.
