Keiki delighted to ‘Play Ball!’

LAHAINA — The shouts of “Play Ball” resounded all across Maui in the breakout from the pandemic, as kids of all ages returned to the ballparks. From Hana to Lahaina and at all diamonds in between, Little League Baseball was back on the fields to the delight of everyone.This was the second year back for the West Maui Little League Baseball program, and league President Anastasia Colt reported that 173 kids participated this season. “There were one Junior, two Majors, two Minors, four Rookies and five Tee Ball teams,” she explained.She added that both the Minors and Majors All-Star Teams reached the championship finals of the Maui District III tournaments. West Maui was defeated in both contests by statewide kingpin Central East Maui.The WMLLB Minors All-Star Team was coached by Feliciano Nakoa, Darren Hirouji and Frank Gomez. The player roster included Kiliona Bacalso, Alexander Bellarosa Gomez, Trey Branco Gomes, Liam Alexander Hirouji, Zayden James Hirouji, Kealii Lanoza Uyeda, Konahao Lanoza Uyeda, Avery Luben, Kolten Magno, Hanalei Peters, Ian Skolnick, Kaesten Bailey Smythe and Cruz Urig.The Majors All-Stars were led by head coach Don Thompson and Jeremy Baldwin and Jessie Nahooikaika.The players were Luca Acker, Reign Baldwin, Delaney Dagupion, Nolan Hashimura Agmata, Kamealoha Lanoza Uyeda, Kingston Medeiros, Kayden Nicholls, Ryzen Pedroza, Joseph James Rosenthal, Micah Thompson and Ryder Urig.League President Colt was joined by Board Members Meredith Medeiros, Karyn Murphy, Jason Gilbert, Jonn Kim, Cheryl Sinogo, Ali Bodick and Emmet Markulis. Hitter’s Paradise owner Mike Diaz and Shannon Sheldon will join the WMLLB staff next season.“The Hitter’s Paradise provided great training for our all-star teams. Their training will add a lot of value to our program by developing a coach certification program and support for the coaches,” said Colt.She also thanked the program sponsors that included 5A Rent A Space, King Screenprinting, Cool Cats, Maui Resort Rentals, Duke’s Beach House, MKEX Excavation, Kane’s Legacy Tree Services, The Snorkel Store, 9th Island Kava Lounge, Glen Pascual Photography, and Aloha Crossfit.“West Maui Little League is putting together training sessions for November with details added to our website and Facebook page. Player evaluation will be held November 29 to December 1. The program is always looking for coaches and board members, and we will be working on bringing back Friday Night Lights, Home Run Derby, and Opening Day ceremonies.
