COACHES’ CODE OF CONDUCT

The purpose of SJBS shall be, through the teaching of the games of baseball and softball, to foster good sportsmanship, honesty, loyalty, courage, reverence and respect for others and to foster and encourage enthusiasm and respect for the games of baseball and softball within the Summit community.  These objectives shall be achieved by providing supervised instructional programs for boys and girls residing in the City of Summit.  IN THESE PROGRAMS, THE ATTAINMENT OF EXCEPTIONAL ATHLETIC SKILL AND THE WINNING OF GAMES OR CONTESTS SHALL BE SECONDARY TO THE TEACHING OF GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP AND THE MOLDING OF GOOD CHARACTER.

We judge our success by our ability to impress these values on our young players.  We cannot accomplish this mission without your support and your agreement to act as adult role models.  As a result we ask you to read and agree to abide by the following:

As a coach in the Summit Junior Baseball and Softball League I WILL:

Teach my players responsibility

  • I will make every effort to attend games and practices.  When I am unable to attend, I will ensure there is adequate coaching coverage
  • I will be sure my players realize the importance of attending and being on time for all practices and games
  • I will be sure my players are picked up from practices and games at their conclusion
  • I will encourage my players to take the time to practice on their own to build skills:

Teach my players to respect other people

  • I will not use foul, insulting or derogatory language or gestures to criticize the umpire, coaches or  players
  • I will tell my player that the umpires are human and may sometimes make mistakes while controlling the game, but that the umpire does not “make or break” the outcome of the game
  • I will know and enforce the rules of the game, including any special rules adopted by SJBS
  • I will not argue with fans from opposing teams

Teach my players that good sportsmanship is essential to the game of baseball and softball

  • I will applaud a good effort in victory and defeat
  • I will applaud good play by the opposing team and players
  • I will discipline my players for use of foul or inappropriate language, or for engaging in unsportsmanlike conduct
  • I will learn the Players’ Code of Conduct, taking advantage of every opportunity to reinforce this code with my players

I understand the conduct expected of me as a coach of Summit Junior Baseball and Softball players.  My failure to conduct myself in accordance with this Coaches’ and Parents’ Code of Conduct may result in my and my child/children’s removal from this league or other disciplinary actions as determined by a special committee convened by the President of Summit Junior Baseball & Softball (Bylaws Article VIII, Section 2).
