Participation Trophy Policy

For the older kids, we believe participation trophies aren’t necessarily to teaching kids the positive values and behaviors WJYAA sports are intended to instill. They don’t serve the purpose of praising or rewarding the youth for participation and commitment.

WJYAA Youth sports offer an ideal platform for teaching kid’s valuable life lessons like how to win and lose graciously, working as a team, respect opponents, and implement fairness. The true focus for youth sports should be promoting sportsmanship and ensuring enjoyment for all children.

WJYAA will do everything possible within our organization to ensure that the right coaches and league officials are in place to accomplish the goals of youth sports and focus on skill development, and the process as opposed to the outcome of games.

WJYAA has decided to remove requirements within our rules for participation trophy requirements within our organization.

Players participating in leagues or teams 8 years-old or under will have no impact on participation trophy or awards.

Players participating in leagues or teams older than 8 years-old will no longer receive a participant trophy.

Effective immediately a plan will be decided by each of the sport commissioners approved by the WJYAA Board. Hopefully a consistent policy can be placed within each sport rules so we can provide a certificate or something else to remember the season other than a participation trophy.

WJYAA has been reviewing this item for a number of years however decided to implement this policy effective immediately. WJYAA sport leagues’ placement trophy’s for winning in the various league’s will continue, only WJYAA participation trophies have now been discontinued.

This should have no effect on signup fees as a participation trophy cost around $3-$4

We realize it is important to provide the participant with something of remembrance of their time in the sport. WJYAA will be working with all sport commissioners going forward to ensure proper adherence to this policy is followed.   This policy is effective January 6th decided by the WJYAA Executive Board. This policy replaces all similar policies of WJYAA.
