Special Announcements

Dear SJMSAA Members,

Recently, our organization shared with you the sad news that our SJMSAA Co-Founder, Mr. Keith Martin, passed away earlier this year.  Many families in this community had the honor of working with and knowing Mr. Martin over the years as he embarked on a quest to instill excellence into the youth activities in our county. For those who may not have met him, we have been privileged to continue to enjoy the legacy of his hard work in many of the programs that our children still participate in today.

Because of what Mr. Martin accomplished for the youth of St. Johns County, we are asking for your support in honoring his great body of work. Community members have put forth a request to our County Commissioners to name our Field of Dreams county park to the
“Keith Martin Field of Dreams.”

We currently are represented by five St. Johns County Commissioners who have added this resolution to the next county meeting agenda being held on March 17, 2020. In order to move forward with passing the resolution, they have requested to hear from our community. We can show our support by each sending a brief email to the county commissioners prior to the meeting.

To St. Johns County Commissioners,

As a resident of St. Johns County, I am contacting you to show my support for renaming
the Field of Dreams county park to the “Keith Martin Field of Dreams.”
Keith Martin impacted our youth for the past decade & his legacy remains
for decades to come. Without Keith Martin, Field of Dreams, nor middle school sports,
nor middle school “Victory with Honor” would exist.

Thank you for taking swift action to pass this resolution.

We appreciate your support for this initiative. We have also included a brief outline below of some of the most important contributions by Keith Martin to our community. This list, of course, does not begin to encompass the lasting impact his tireless efforts have had throughout St. Johns County, however even this small glimpse begins to paint a picture of a man who put his heart and soul into the community and always put the kids first.

Keith Martin’s Leadership:

  • President of Creeks Athletic Association
  • President of Julington Creek Baseball
  • President of BTHS Boosters
  • Recipient of Tom Kehoe Award for Volunteerism, Vision, Leadership, Implementation
  • Co-Founder St. Johns Middle School Athletics Association
  • Founder of Field of Dreams

Some additional specifics on his leadership as co-founder of St. Johns Middle School Athletic Association and founder of Field of Dreams  include:

For over 20 years, SJC did not have traditional middle school sports (ex. football, baseball, soccer, cheer, etc.). Keith mobilized a large group of volunteers to make the “impossible” possible. Under his leadership, the inaugural SJMSAA raised over $150,000 cash as well as $50,000 in supplies to bring middle school sports to our county. He introduced “Victory with Honor” to the middle schools (which had never been done before), created after-school study halls, provided students scholarships to play, and offered the ability for students in high weight brackets
(180 lbs.) to be able to play football beyond the youth programs for the first time before entering high school. His after-school sports program allowed the time to now have the family dinner table back.

Mr. Martin then turned his attention to raising over $65,000 to bring Field of Dreams to our area. This inclusive program, allowed children with intellectual and physical disabilities to play baseball, most for the first time in their lives, as part of a team. He brought together sports programs from throughout the county to volunteer and work together to make games at Field of Dreams  by far some of the most enjoyable experiences and events one can attend in this community.
