FAQ's

How do I determine what the ages are for each division?
Review the 2024 Football Aged Based Matrix (coming soon). Another way to determine this is by what age  your child is on August 1, 2024. That will be his /her “Football Age.” For example, if your child was born on August 15th, 2013, they would be considered 10 (or 10U) for the 2024 season. We typically offer programs for kids ages 5-14 starting with flag (ages 5-7) up  to 14U tackle. For the 2023 season, we had 4 teams: 1) Flag (5-7 yr olds), 2) 9U (8 & 9 yr olds), 3) 11U (10 & 11 yr olds), 4) 13 U (12 & 13 yr olds)

What do my registration fees cover?
Registration fee includes: game jersey, practice jersey, shoulder pads, helmet with chin strap, practice pants, and game pants. You keep the game jersey but return everything else at end of the season. Registration fee also includes all the various expenses to run our program: game day fee's (ie. field rental, referees, EMT), insurance, conference fees, equipment, and more. Registration fees alone do not cover the cost to run the program, we also rely on sponsors. Youth tackle football is more expensive than other sports. Flag registration fees are lower and include a jersey and shorts.

You can help keep fees low by assisting Coronado Pop Warner in obtaining corporate and local business sponsorships. If you own or operate a business, or know someone who does that is willing to help support the youth of CPW, please contact [email protected]

What are the season dates and time commitment?
The Pop Warner season begins every August 1st. The actual length of the season depends on the individual team and how far they make it in the playoffs. In general, most tackle football teams end their season in early to mid-November and flag teams end in late October. Each team typically has 8-10 games.

From August 1st through Labor Day, tackle football teams practice five times per week.  After Labor Day, the football teams go down to three practices per week, with one game each Saturday.  Practices usually last two hours and are scheduled in the early evening. Flag practices are 1.5 hours.

What do I need to bring with me to registration?
Check out the registration page for these details. Please provide your documentation online in our registration system as this will save everyone a lot of time.

What else does my child need prior to the first practice?
Cleats, mouthguard (always have a backup), and water bottle.

What is "mandatory conditioning"?
During the first week of practice, or the first 20 hours, the players "condition" with only helmets and mouthpieces. The main purpose is to get the kids into shape prior to placing them in pads. This is also the time we focus on football fundamentals, proper tackling techniques, and various drills.

Where are practices held?
We will receive our field allocation sometime in the summer of 2024. Practices will either be held at Cays Park or Tidelands Park.

How is playing time handled?
Every player will have a chance to play in every game, regardless of experience or skill level. Pop Warner enforces a strict minimum play rule that guarantees every player gets a chance to play at least 10-16 plays per game (the minimum number of plays depends on team size). Most games are 40-60 plays. Playing time beyond the minimum play requirement is up to the coaches.

Do you offer flag football?
No, not for the 2024 season. Pop Warner offers flag football for kids ages 5-7 but we are not planning to have a flag team for the 2024 season.

When & where are the games?
All games are played on Saturdays. Our home games are played at Coronado High School. The Pop Warner West Coast Conference schedules the games. For home games, they typically schedule a full day at Coronado High so all of our teams will play at the same location. We make our field available almost every week of the season and try to get as many home games as we can (usually 50-60% of games are home). Away games are anywhere in the broader San Diego area.

How can I volunteer?
Coronado Pop Warner is 100% volunteer lead. Please review the volunteer page for more information.
