Recreation Basketball Guidelines

General Rules
All games will consist of 5 periods. The 1st, 3rd and 5th periods will be a 6 minute clock and considered the "A" periods.  The 2nd and 4th periods will be an 8 minute (boys)/10 minute (girls) running clock that only stops for timeouts/foul shots and will be considered the "B" periods.
Periods 1 and 2 are the first half which 3, 4, 5 are the second half.  There are 2 full (60 sec) timeouts and 1 (30 sec) timeout in a regulation game.

Overtime will be 2 minutes with one timeout per team to be used in the first period of overtime only.  That one time out does not carry over into the 2nd overtime, no more timeouts after the first period of overtime.  Timeouts from regulation do not carry over into overtime.  If still tied after the first overtime, the game will continue with 1 minute overtime periods thereafter until there is a winner.

Playoff format is decided on by the Sports League Board and will vary depending on number of teams and time constraints.

No players are to bring basketballs into the St. Dominic Gym.  All warm up and game balls will be provided by the league.  Anyone who brings a ball will be asked to return it to their car or the board will secure it for them until they are ready to leave.  There will be no shoot arounds during timeouts or between games.

All subs must check in at the table before entering the game.  Only the referee may stop a game to allow substitutions.
All disputes will be decided by the League Rep in charge and will be final.  Any coach that shows disrespect for opposing coaches, any players, referee, league officials, and/or scorekeepers will receive a technical foul.

Fouls: Periods 1 and 2 are the first half which 3, 4, 5 are the second half.   If a team reaches 10 team fouls in the first half, it goes to a 1 and 1 bonus.  If they reach 13 in the second half, the it goes into the 1 and 1 bonus.
Player movement when shooting at the foul line is on the release of the ball from the shooter.  Players foul out of the game after 5 personal fouls.
Any player or coach ejected from a game for any reason will be suspended for the next game and subject to an indefinite suspension upon review from the Sports League Board.

Player Time Rules and Guidelines
The following rules, guidelines and player designations maybe adjusted on a game by game basis depending on skill level, attendance and coaches cooperation.  Any player designation changes must be agreed to before tip-off by both coaches and agreed to by the League Rep present.

Each team must designate their least skilled players as "B" players.  This is based on skill not grade.  No player that plays in the 4th period, may play in the 5th, unless approved by the opposing coach.  Team must be balanced out before game time
13 total players = need at least 6 "B" players
12 total players = need at least 6 "B" players
11 total players = need at least 5 "B" players
10 total players = need at least 5 "B players
9 total players = need at least 5 "B" players + 1 A/B
8 total players = need at least 5 "B" players + 2 A/B

No 5th(junior boys) or 8th(senior boys) boys should play in the "B" periods, unless approved first.  If an "A" must play during the "B" due to player attendance, they can only rebound and pass, unless agreed upon by the coaches and the league rep present prior to the game.

All players must be given equal playing time, regardless of skill.

In the girls division, GENERAL grade guidelines: 3-5 are "B" and 6-8 are "A"

Boy players are only allowed to participate in the league for 3 years in the junior division and 3 years in the senior division.  There is no "playing up" in the boys divisions.  Girls may play from 3-8th grades.  Any purposeful misinformation on registration forms will result in having themselves and child banned from the league.

Coaches
Each team will have one head coach and at least one assistant coach, but no more than two assistants.  Only 2 coaches are allowed on the bench during the game time.  Head Coach must submit a list of assistants prior to the start of the season.

Coaches maybe replaced during the year with approval of the St Dominic Sports League Board.  The division coordinator will provide the board with the reasons and it will be determined then.  Coaches are expected to treat the league, players, volunteers, parents, referees, the Sports League members and the game overall with respect and sportsmanship.

If a coach quits or is removed at any time during the season, they give up all positions within the league.  Each team will be given one practice a week for one hour.  There will be no combining practice times/scrimmaging or splitting gyms with other teams.

Coaches will also be responsible for all family members of the team during practices.  We cannot have parents and siblings running the halls of the gyms and schools we are using for practice.  Remember, we are guests there.

Regular Season games will not be rescheduled if a coach can't make it to a game, the assistant coach will coach.  If both the coach and assistant coach can't make a game, the game is played as scheduled and the League will provide the team with a coach for that game.
The only games that will be moved/adjusted for availability will be playoff games.

Senior Boys Division
The official game ball is a full size basketball, 29.5"

There will be no pressing by a team ahead by more than 15 or more points and no pressing during the entire 2nd and 4th or "B" periods.  During the non-press periods, defensive players must stand behind the 3 point arc, until the ball carrier crosses the midcourt line.

Junior Boys Division
The official game ball size is 28.5"

There will be no pressing by a team ahead by 10 or more points and will only occur in the last 3 minutes of the 5th period.  During the non-press periods, defensive players must stand behind the 3 point arc, until the ball carrier crosses the midcourt line.

Players in the "B" periods may take up to 2 steps closer to shoot foul shots but cannot be the first player to touch the ball on a missed shot rebound.

Girls Division
The official game ball size is 28.5"

There will be no pressing by a team ahead by 10 or more points and will only occur in the last 3 minutes of the 5th period.  During the non-press periods, defensive players must stand behind the 3 point arc, until the ball carrier crosses the midcourt line.

Players in the "B" periods may take up to 2 steps closer to shoot foul shots but cannot be the first player to touch the ball on a missed shot rebound.

Sportsmanship General Guidelines:  When is a team is up 20+ points on an opponent, the league asks the coaches to demonstrate sportsmanship and not run up the score:  Suggested Actions:  pack in the defense giving up outside shots, stop running fast breaks = slowing down the game, swap A's for B's

Any player or coach ejected from a game by an official or the sports league itself will go under review by the Sports League to determine if further action is necessary.
