Volunteers News

Hi and welcome to the WaveRiders Swim Team Season!

Volunteering is a very important part of swim meets and required as part of the registration process.  Without parent volunteers we would not have meets and the kids would not have the fun that they do!  Below outlines the expectations of volunteering along with the descriptions of positions. As this is a fun opportunity for kids, we are willing to work with parents so please contact the Meet Manager if there are any question or concerns regarding volunteering.

REQUIREMENTS:

The requirements for the WaveRiders swim team are as follows:

  1. Minimum 4 meets (or max number of meets the swimmers will attend)

  2. Only 1 member of the family needs to volunteer per meet but more are always appreciated

  3. Volunteers only have to participate in one half of the meet.  If you have a younger swimmer that is only swimming in the first half of the meet, please only volunteer for the first half of the meet

  4. Volunteers should choose a position they are comfortable with

We do keep a log of all family volunteer efforts.  If you do not sign up for a position, your family will be “volun-told” and your family will be responsible for filling that position during the meet.  Those position will be assigned to those families that have not signed up and that are not meeting the minimum requirement.

If your family does not make the minimum requirement and does not volunteer for swim meets or make alternate arrangements for volunteering, we reserve the right to pull your child(ren) from the swim meets and not allow them to swim until you volunteer at a meet.

POSITIONS:

Strokes & Turn Judge:
The Strokes & Turns judges evaluate swimmers to insure that the designated strokes and turns for the event are being performed in accordance with rules. This position has the best view of the pool, but requires attending a league clinic prior to the start of the season.

Timer:
The timer is the person who verifies the swimmer is in the correct lane and times the kids, giving high fives and "way to go" when they are done with their swim. The position stands at the block or with the 8 and Unders at the other end of the pool and waits for the kids to finish the race. When they touch the wall you click the self-start timer and you are done with that heat!!  Very exciting.

Runner:
The runner collects the timer paper and any DQ sheets, then places them on the clipboard for the table workers.  You are not really running but you are on the move. No worries though, you will have front row seats to watch your kids pool side as there is always a moment to stop and cheer them on!!

Table Worker:
Literally the coolest position at the meet!  Sit up in the AC clubhouse and help the computer workers with sorting and organizing all the papers that the runner will deliver so that they can put it into the computer.  While they are inputting the results, go stand on the balcony and get the best seat in the house to watch your children swim!!

Seater:
Helps the Clerk of Course with lining up and seating the kids prior to their events.  It is crazy and loud and chaotic and so much fun!! The energy, the excitement, the laughter you cannot help but love this position.  High fives and Good Lucks are a must for this position!!

8 and Under Parents:
Make sure that all the 8 and Under kids make it to the Clerk of Course. If they are not there, then you go find them and bring them to the seaters. The position could be compared to herding chickens but they are the cutest chickens you will ever see!  They are so eager and excited that you will be excited for them!

Heat Ribbon:
At the end of each heat, there is a winner and that winner will get a ribbon.  Who does not like to hand out ribbons?! And last year they got a little extra something for winning the heat too!!  Sure to be a crowd favorite and you get to be the first to congratulate the winner of the heat!!

Hospitality:
On those hot nights, standing by a pool, who does not like a cold water.  Be the one to deliver the ice cold water bottles to the volunteers and they will be very appreciative.  Between delivering water, stop by the pool side and cheer on your kids -- they will appreciate the cheers and encouragement!!

Concessions:
Help the hungry swimmers out with pizza, ring pops, sour patch kids and other food that will give them energy to swim their hardest and win lots of ribbons!!  High energy is required to keep up with all the people that are hungry and excited about the night to come!!
