Winning is a consideration, but not the only one, nor the most important one. Care more about the players than winning the game. 2. Give all players the opportunity to improve their skills, gain confidence and develop self-esteem; teach them the basics. 3. Be a positive role model to your players, display emotional maturity and be alert to the physical safety of players. Be generous with your praise when it is deserved; be consistent; be honest; be fair and just; do not criticize players publicly or yell at them; learn to be a more effective communicator and coach. Adjust to personal needs and problems of players, be a good listener, never verbally or physically abuse a player or officials. 4. Organize practices that are fun and challenging for your players. Familiarize yourself with the rules, techniques and strategies of baseball/softball; encourage all players to be team players. Recognize and remember this program is comprised of young athletes, not professionals. 5. Maintain an open line of communication with your players’ parents. Explain the goals and objectives of your association. Make the sport a positive, fun experience for the players and their families. 6. Do not yell at officials, scorekeepers, spectators, or other coaches. Discuss any issues with the umpires or coaches in a civil manner; any serious issues need to be discussed after a game in private and out of the view of others. 7. Ensure that only players and coaches are allowed in the dugouts. Please refer to General Rules for number of coaches allowed. Clean and empty trash out after games. 8. Express any concerns through the proper channels in a dignified manner.
