What does 6U, 8U, 10U, 12U & 14U mean?

Previously we were with Norcal Fed and we used grades to set teams. There use to be Mighty Mites (Kindergarten - 2nd grade), Jr. Pee Wee (3rd & 4th grade), Pee Wee (5th & 6th grade), Jr Midgets (7th grade) & Midgets (8th grade). Now we are with the Sacramento Youth Football League and the teams are done a little differently. The SYF sets the teams by age.

For example:
6U means any child that is 6 years old as of July 31st of the current year will be on that team. He/she can turn 7 as of August 1st and they are still eligible for the 6U team.

Of course you can move them to a higher team for example the 8U team if you think your child can compete at that age group.
