FUTBOL DE SALON (FUTSAL)

Futsal is an exciting, fast-paced small sided football game that originates from South America in the 1930s. It is widely played across the world, and is the small sided football format that is officially recognized by FIFA.

The first Futsal World Cup was played in Brazil in 1982 in the City of São Paulo, Brazil between May 30 and June 6. All matches were played at the Ibirapuera Gymnasium. The contest was won by Brazil, after winning the final 1-0 against Paraguay on June 6 in San Pablo.

The nature of the game places a large emphasis on technical skill and ability in situations of high pressure, and is subsequently an excellent breeding ground for football competencies that can be translated into the 11-a-side format of the game. Players like Pele, Zico, Ronaldinho, Kaka, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Iniesta, Xavi, Fabregas to name but a few legends all played and enjoyed Futsal.

DESCRIPTION

What is Futbol De Salon (Futsal):

Futbol De Salon (Futsal) is a game played between two teams of five players on each side. One of the five players is a goalkeeper who unlike soccer/football is very active out on the field. The game of futsal is played on a hard court surface with flat lines on it like a basketball court for the boundaries.

Futsal is essentially football with a twist (and a lot less number of rules), it's a five a side game which includes one goalkeeper for each side, with a much smaller pitch, mostly played indoor stadiums and a (slightly) different ball.

Futsal is widely played across the world, and is a valuable development tool for increasing the technical proficiency of young players. Futsal fosters key skills and techniques as well as provides players with increased opportunities to:

  A)  Develop their agility, balance, coordination and speed
  B)  Become more comfortable with the ball
  C)  Practice passing, dribbling, turning, shooting and ball control in small space while under pressure.
  D)  Learn to make quick decisions while under pressure in tight spaces

THE BENEFITS OF FUTSAL

Although Futsal is very much a game in its own right, there are also a number of benefits for football / soccer by encouraging young players to play Futsal as part of a balanced training program to improve their overall technical development. Futsal creates an environment that allows young people to simulate as well as develop many additional skills and proficiencies that are transferrable to 7v7, 9v9, as well as 11-a-side game.

The nature of Futsal with the smaller confine field makes it harder to find space; but, does improve visions and creativity. The line markings prevents easy escape from tight situations (such as in traditional 5-a-side where players can play the ball off the wall), and the smaller heavier ball which supports closer ball control and manipulation supports technical skills development of players in various ways.

·         Futsal as a game naturally brings players into regular one-on-one situations with their opponent, encouraging players into quick decision- making

·         Futsal teaches young players the importance of ball retention due to the threat of an immediate counter-attack.

·         Confidence on the ball, receiving a pass under pressure, decision-making in 1v1 situations, and ball retention are all important fundamental skills that we look to develop in young football players that are practiced regularly within a game environment in futsal.

·         Futsal also supports young player development in other ways, such as: speed and fluidity of the game supports players in understanding and improving their skills in the transition (counter-attacking) phase.

·         Futsal encourages movement and rotation from players as well as a sense of innovation and creativity to unlock defenses and to create some space for yourself or team-mates.
