Where will practices be held and how long are they?
Practices will be held in Powhatan County. Practice will last at least 60 or 90 minutes depending on gym space. We will do our best to schedule the younger ages for the 6:00 time slots. Practices will be 'closed' meaning only players and coaches are to attend. This is to allow for dedicated practice time with limited distractions and to ensure the facilities are being used in accordance with each locations requirements. Water bottles should be left at the gym entrance or on the stage area.
*Instructional girls practices will start in January.
Where will games be played and how long are they?
Games will be played at a Chesterfield County school on Saturdays and Sundays (boys and girls). Anticipate playing two games per weekend on different days. Games last roughly one hour and players are expected to arrive 30 minute prior to game time.
My child hasn't played basketball before, can he/she still participate?
Absolutely and, as a matter of fact, we encourage it. Although we play in a competitive league, we want all players to have the opportunity to develop and be part of the team. Talent level makes no difference to us. Attitude and effort are all that matter. If you are still concerned, please contact vicepresident@powhatanpulse.com
What do I need to provide?
- If you are new to the program, you will be required to provide a birth certificate.
- All players/parents will be sent and required to send back Chesterfield League Player Registration and Code of Conduct documents.
- These documents will be sent out after registration
- Appropriate shoes, socks, practice gear and, if possible, a basketball.
- Shoes are preferably basketball shoes but any type of athletic shoe with a non-streaking rubber sole will do.
- Socks are preferably calf length but, at a minimum, should cover the foot and ankle to prevent rubbing against the inside of the shoe which leads to blisters.
- Practice gear should be shorts and a t-shirt.
- Basketball sizes per gender/age:
- Girls – 28.5
- Boys 12 & older - 29.5
- Boys 11 & younger - 28.5
How are teams chosen?
We do not cut. If we have enough players to create two teams at any given age level, the players will be distributed equally based on talent. Our intent is to create equally competitive teams.
How is playing time determined?
We believe in equal playing time and our coaches will do their best to manage it. The Chesterfield Basketball Leagues require each player to sit a minimum of one quarter and play a minimum of one quarter. Players frequently missing practice or that are disruptive at practice may see reduced playing time as long as the coach meets the league minimum requirements.
How will I know if there are cancellations or changes?
- You will receive a text message and email from your coach. As part of the season preparation, we will validate cell phone numbers just for this purpose.
- If Powhatan County Schools are closed, practice is cancelled.
- If Chesterfield County Schools are closed on Friday, games are cancelled for that weekend. Make-up dates will be communicated as soon as they are available.
- If something happens between school dismissal and practice or games, we will follow a text tree. Practices – Pulse Basketball President or Vice President will communicate to affected coaches. Coaches will communicate to parents.
- Games – Chesterfield will communicate to President or Vice President of Pulse Basketball. President or VP will communicate to coaches. Coaches will communicate to parents.
