Dane Tobey earns Jerry Martenson Manager of the Year Award

ABOUT JERRY MARTENSON AND THE AWARD GIVEN EACH YEAR IN HIS NAME

Jerry Martenson was born Oct. 9, 1956, in Kearney and died Thursday, March 3, 2016, at CHI Health
Good Samaritan Hospital. He was the youngest of five children. He grew up in Kearney where he
attended Zion Lutheran School and graduated from Kearney High School in 1974. As a young man Jerry
pursued his passion for baseball. He was a team member of the Kearney Midgets in 1973 and was
catcher for the Kearney Legion in 1974-1975, leading the way to many championships throughout his
teenage years.

Jerry was an expert on the rules of baseball and was never shy in sharing his knowledge of the rule book.
As his boys were growing up, Jerry was involved with Kearney Little League Baseball. He coached many
youths in the Kearney area. He always encouraged their skills, built teamwork and helped them to be
their best. He recognized the unique talents that each team member brought to the game and never
missed an opportunity to share his passion for baseball with his players.
