Eligibility

Chemung Sailfish is a competitive swim team open to swimmers who are a minimum of 6 years of age and comfortable in the water. An in-water assessment will be conducted by our coaching staff in order to join. Please note this is not a learn-to-swim program.

Registration

Registration is done entirely online at the beginning of each season; Fall/Winter.

Swim Assessment/Tryout

Prior to registration, swimmers should come to the pool for the open week of tryouts in mid October (dates will be announced) prepared to swim with swimsuit, and goggles. Sailfish coaches will assess the swimmers' ability in the water to determine their appropriate practice group. Swimmers then would complete on-line registration. (Registration is rolling - you can contact us to start at any time during the season)

Commitment

Swimmers not required to attend a certain number of practice sessions each week, or compete in all of the meets.  However, in order to keep improving and achieving better times, swimmers are encouraged to practice and compete as often as they can.

Practice Levels and Pricing

Level 1 Swimmers: (typically our younger swimmers)
Can swim 25 yards without stopping
Practice sessions are 1 hour from 6:00-7:00 Monday - Thursday
Note that practices follow the Elmira City School District Schedule - if school or after school activities are cancelled, so is practice.

• Overview: Beginning competitive swimmers learning stroke and kick techniques for each stroke, alternative breathing, beginning starts, turns and competition rules and regulations.
• Meet distances for competition are most often 25-50 yds for 8 & under age group
• General Ages: 6-8 yrs

Level 2 Swimmers: (typically our returning and more advanced swimmers)
Can swim up to 400 yards without stopping, proficient in 3-4 strokes.
Practice sessions are 2 hours starting at 6:30pm Monday - Thursday
Note that practices follow the Elmira City School District Schedule - if school or after school activities are cancelled, so is practice.

• Overview: Seasoned or progressing competitive swimmers, increasing endurance, refining technique, starts and turns, increasing competitive swimming experience.
• Meet distances for competition for 9-10 year old age group are most often 50-200 yds.
• Meet distances for competition for 11 & up age groups are most often 50-500 yds.
• General Ages: 9 & Up

Level 1 Swimmers - 1 hour: $385 
Level 2 Swimmers - 2 hours: $435 
**Special discounts are applied for Elmira Express school swim team members**

USA SWIMMS Membership 2023/24: annual membership fee is $91 per swimmer. (Membership is required to participate as this provides the insurance needed to participate in our program)
