Travel basketball is for children looking for a more competitive program than traditional Recreation basketball. Each player is not guaranteed a minimum amount of playing time, instead playing time is left to the discretion of the coaches. The Travel basketball program is open to all children in grades 3rd through 8th living, or attending school, in Midland Park. The league runs from December until March.

Teams - The number of teams is determined by the number of total players and coaching volunteers, and typically has a minimum of 8 players per team. Tryouts may be necessary based on number of registrations.  Team roster placements, and or combining of age groups, are at the discretion of MPBA.

Practices - Typically begin at some point in November.  Schedule is based on coach and gym availability, and may or may not be set times/days per week.  More practice sessions will be available prior to the start of the season.  Once the season starts, gym availability for practices is less frequent.

Games - Teams typically play a 16 game regular season, plus playoff games (if qualify), and possible tournament(s).  It could be a team plays one or more games per week.  Games are scheduled by the league the team is registered in.  Master schedules become available one week prior to start of the season.  Games are played week-nights usually with start times between 6:00PM and 9:00PM. Weekend game start times vary between 9:00AM - 5:00PM.  Games are played against other towns, which may include towns from Bergen, Passaic, Morris, or Hudson County.

Coaching - Each travel team is in NEED of at least one volunteer parent to coach.  MPBA does not have the resources to coach teams.  A team can’t begin practices until a coach is in place.  In the event a team does not have a coach in place by the time practices are set to begin, MPBA reserves the right to disband the team, and will refund registration payments.  Contact MPBA for more information if you want to coach.

Uniforms - Travel uniforms (jerseys & shorts) are an additional cost - they are not included with registration fees.  Parents are responsible for ordering uniforms directly through Farrier Sporting Goods in Wyckoff, NJ.  MPBA will notify parents of scheduled dates/times to place uniform orders.  In the event the current uniform style gets discontinued, MPBA reserves the right to select a different style uniform.  Jersey #'s are assigned by MPBA...no special requests please.

Also, please note that NJ state law requires participants in youth sports who wear eyeglasses to wear protective sport glasses.  All players must bring their own water or sports drink in a bottle (preferably reusable) labeled with player's name to every practice and game.       Absolutely no sharing of drinks will be permitted. All jewelry and hard hair accessories are prohibited during games.
