Selinsgrove Area Little League divides its Minor baseball into the following categories and playing regulations:
T–Ball:
Players are typically baseball ages 4 and 5. If the number of volunteer coaches allows, there should be a maximum of 10 players on a team. Game play consists of a minimum of 3 innings. Basic rules include:
Batting
• All players bat each inning.
• Players can elect to hit off of a tee or from a coach pitching a ball.
• There are no strikeouts. After three missed attempts to hit a coach–pitched ball, the player hits from the tee.
In The Field
• When on defense, all players are on the field.
• Coaches are in the field helping players stay focused and teaching the game.
Base Running
• Runner will take one base when ball should’ve been touched by an attentive player.
• Runner will take two bases when a ball is hit hard beyond players or was unable to be played by an attentive player.
Recording Outs
• Players called out at a base are removed from the base paths.
• If the defense records three outs in an inning, remove any base runners, reset the outs to zero, and continue batting until all offensive players had the opportunity to hit.
Rookies (baseball):
Players are typically baseball ages 6 and 7. There should be between 10 and 12 players on a team. Game play consists of 6 innings.
Batting
• Continuous batting order – all players are in the lineup, not just the players on the field
• Strikeouts:
• Coach pitch (first half of the year) – batter must strike out swinging
• Kid pitch – call balls and strikes – if a coach comes in to finish the at–bat or inning (see pitching below) continue to call strikes
• Switch offense and defense after 3 outs OR 5 runs, whichever comes first
Pitching
• First half of the year is entirely coach pitch. The player in the “pitcher” position stands next to coach.
• The league player agent will set a date where players begin to pitch in games.
• Second half of the year is kid pitch. Players pitch the first three innings of the game and coaches pitch the final three innings of the game.
• One inning per pitcher
• No bases on balls – after four balls, a coach finishes the at–bat.
• Hit By Pitch – batter is awarded first base – if a pitcher hits 2 or 3 batters the coach should pitch the remainder of inning
• Offensive coach calls balls and strikes for his batter from behind pitcher
• If a kid “walks” four straight batters, coach finishes pitching the inning
• Mound is 40’ from home plate (Little league mounds are 46’ from the plate)
In The Field
• Ten players (four outfielders)
• Two coaches on the field to help players learn the game
One Base vs. Extra Bases
• One base when ball stays in front of the infielder
• Two bases when the ball gets beyond the infielders (infielder is determined by the player not the physical infield)
• Base runners may advance the same number of bases as batter is permitted.
Coach Pitch (softball):
Players are typically softball ages 6 and 7. There should be between 10 and 12 players on a team. Game play consists of 6 innings.
Batting
• Continuous batting order – all players are in the lineup, not just the players on the field
• Strikeouts
• All innings are coach pitch from a distance of 35 feet from home plate.
• Strikes will be called by the coach; batter must strike out swinging.
• Switch offense and defense after 3 outs OR 5 runs, whichever comes first
In The Field
• Ten players (four outfielders)
• Two coaches on the field to help players learn the game
• Two innings per position
• Play infield and outfield position in each game
One Base vs. Extra Bases
• Play stops after an infielder has complete control of the ball and is in the infield.
The divisions that follow are governed by the Little League rule book; exceptions are noted within divisions as needed.
