Coach Training

CCSL encourages coaches to embrace their roles as coaches by seeking to understand not only the rules of the game but also how to best develop our players.  As an affiliate of VYSA, USYSA, and USSF we fully support the US Soccer Player Development Initiatives.  This includes the implementation of birth year registrations, Small-Sided Games, and Grassroots courses.

Requirements for all coaches: Head coaches and assistant coaches have the same training requirements unless otherwise noted.  The number of assistant coaches is typically limited to 1 for each rec team and 2 for travel teams.  All coaches must:
  • Pass a background check
  • Complete SafeSport Training/Sexual Abuse Prevention Training (SAPT)
  • Complete concussion training from the CDC or NFHS
  • Attend the mandatory coach meeting(s)
  • Comply with applicable items from the Additional Requirements for Coaches section below

Additional Requirements for Coaches: CCSL is phasing in US Soccer Grassroots and Positive Coaching Alliance training to our requirements.  These requirements will be phased in over the next few seasons.  For the Fall 2021 season, the additional requirements are:

    • All U6 and U8 coaches are required to complete the 4v4 Online Course prior to their first practice.   See the Grassroots Courses section for more info
    • All travel coaches are required to:
      • complete a Grassroots course appropriate for the age group for which they plan on coaching.  See the Grassroots Courses section for more info
      • complete Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) courses as designate by the CCSL Board (TBD)
Grassroots Courses:
It is highly encouraged that all coaches take a Grassroots course appropriate for the age group for which they plan on coaching. These courses are available online and CCSL will reimburse the $25 fee upon submission of receipt and certificate of completion.
U11 / U12 - 9v9 Online Course
U13 / U14 - 11v11 Online Course

General course description:  The Online Course is a two-hour course that builds on the principles covered in U.S. Soccer's Introduction to Grassroots Coaching Module. Specifically, candidates will learn more about U.S. Soccer's Grassroots Coaching Education Philosophy, Play-Practice-Play Methodology, the Six Tasks of a Coach, and the characteristics of players for the age group. The course will also ask each candidate to reflect on their experiences to develop action steps for personal growth.
