The State of California enacted a new law effective January 1, 2017, regarding concussions in youth sports.  It is an amendment of a previous law that covered high school athletes that now covers all athletes under the age of 18. Its’ purpose is to provide specific safety protocols in order to protect athletes from injury. It is AB 2007.  Youth baseball and softball is included in this law. AB 2007 and AB 1639
The new law requires training for the coaches (managers and assistant coaches on your roster). The training is about 20 minutes each. You must register in order to login and take the training.

A new California law also requires all K-12 schools in the state to educate coaches, parents/guardians and student athletes about sudden cardiac arrest. SCA occurs when the heart suddenly stops beating — typically due to arrhythmia. It is also a leading cause of death for student athletes and often fatal if not treated within minutes.

With this risk in mind, Assembly Bill 1639 (Maienschein, R-San Diego) requires coaches of athletic activities to complete the sudden cardiac arrest prevention training course and retake the course every two years. The requirement applies to coaches of interscholastic athletics, cheerleading and noncompetitive cheerleading, club-sponsored sports activities and practices, interscholastic practices and scrimmages (but not physical education classes).

7) Protecting our Young Athletes from Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation - Coaches Training (Safe to Compete)

A recent bill (AB 506) was passed by the State of California requiring volunteers and staff of Youth Service Organizations to complete training in child abuse and neglect reporting. AB 506 goes into effect on January 1, 2022. All staff and regular volunteers who are 18 years of age or older and who have direct contact with, or supervision of, children for more than 16 hours a month or 32 hours per year must complete a background check and complete online General Training and Mandated Reporter Training. Link for AB 506
