Opening Ceremonies Recap

The ceremony started with the annual parade of players.   Asher Rosenberg and Evan Astrike-Davis delivered the Little League pledges prior to a stirring rendition of the National Anthem by Majors Head Coach Mike Masinick.

In 2015 SDLL began awarding the Yousef Shabazz Sportsmanship Scholarship Award. Yousef Shabazz was a long time SDLL coach that passed away unexpectedly in 2014. The award goes to a league age 12 SDLL player based on their sportsmanship, teamwork and overall love of baseball.  For 2018, SDLL has two players who met this criteria, Max Rosselli and Landon Futrell.

Max Rosselli has a long, storied history with SDLL.   Playing primarily 1b and Catcher, he is a two time Mayor's Cup Champion with a understated toughness and smile for all his coaches and teammates always.  .  But, more importantly, he has been a great teammate over the years.

Landon Futrell has been a utility player, who never says no to what is asked of him on the field.  He has never played for the same coach during his career with SDLL, but every coach says the same thing - extremely positive regardless of a win or a loss, hardworking, respectful, determined, and most of all, a true teammate.  As one coach wrote "in my 8 years of affiliation with South Durham LL, I can't think of a better example of a player who exemplifies the word teammate.   In short, he makes others around him better teammates and better people."

From all of the SDLL Board of Directors, players and coaches, congratulations to these two outstanding recipients of the 2018 Yousef Shabazz Sportsmanship Scholarship Award!

After the presentation of the awards, Robin Rose and Paul Carr of the Miracle League of the Triangle were on hand to receive a $5,000 donation from the members of the SDLL community.  This gift will contribute to the construction of a new Miracle league field in Durham.

The ceremony concluded with a great first pitch delivered by Miracle League of the Triangle Libby Bradford to SDLL's Nick Reed, and the annual throwing of the hats.

Good Luck to everyone on a great season.
