Frequently Asked Questions

How does HCSA differ from rec soccer?

HCSA programs and curriculums are based on a player development philosophy. Our goal is not just to provide an opportunity to play soccer but to help players develop to their full potential. Our coaches are all licensed soccer coaches who are lead by a Director of Coaching who is responsible for designing our programs and curriculum in the best interest of developing the individual player while fostering an enjoyment for the game. We aim to educate parents on our philosophy so they can assist us in creating an environment at games most beneficial for promoting growth and development in our players. In youth soccer we value development over results of games and believe game results will be a byproduct of our focusing on developing the individual player and attractive team play.

Here is a video that explains what a Player Development Philosophy is and why we believe in this philosophy. "What is player development?"

What is the U10 Academy Program?

The U10 Academy is a statewide program for U8-U10 players offered by NCYSA as a stepping stone between recreational or beginner soccer and competitive travel soccer. The Academy Level 3 practices as a pool of 30-60 players each season. The training follows a strict Player Development curriculum. Our goal at this level is not to worry about building teams, or playing to win games. We focus completely on developing the individual soccer player, focusing on their technical skills and comfort in controlling the ball. This philosophy encourages players' individual creativity and enables us to provide them a foundation of technical skills for the rest of their soccer lives.

Here is a document written by NCYSA explaining the Academy Program and Philosophy. "Parent's Guide to Academy"

How much travel is involved in the U10 Academy?

Much less than most anticipate! Actually, participation in the travel opportunities is optional on a week-to-week basis. Our Academy has grown large enough we offer an in-house league each fall and spring where our own Academy players get to play in games amongst themselves. Additionally we set up game with other clubs in our region, generally on Saturdays. We compete with clubs from Lenoir, Hickory, Banner Elk, Winston-Salem, Asheville, and Morganton. We poll the families prior to each game to see who would like to participate. We form teams for that event based on how many players want to participate and generally play two 60-minute games per date. This makes the program extremely flexible in commitment and travel is optional.

How much travel is involved with the travel teams?

Much less than most anticipate. Our teams compete in NCYSA leagues divided up geographically. We generally play clubs in the western half of North Carolina. Our league season consists of 8-10 games, half of which are away games, and half of which are home games. So a typical season only has 4 or 5 away games to one of the following cities; Asheville, Charlotte, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Statesville, Gastonia, Hickory, Lenoir, Yadkinville, etc. We generally will attend 2 tournaments per season; one within a commutable distance from Boone, and one which may require 1-2 nights lodging.
