Barrington Pop Warner

About our Fall program

Barrington Pop Warner is a non-tryout league. We offer a cheer program for ages 5+. Our participants learn sideline cheers, dance, stunting, tumbling and a competitive routine(s) all while gaining friendships with their new teammates.

When does the season start and how often are practices?

National Pop Warner changed the season start date to 7/15 this year for all cheer and tackle teams around the Nation! We will begin light practices once a week starting 7/15 to get a head start on conditioning & cheers. Don't worry- we know people already have plans for the summer and missing July practices will not be held against you. Our "official" start date will be August 1. Practice days/times will vary depending on age, but are typically 2X/week for our youngest Eagles, 3X/week for our middle age group, and 4X/week for our oldest Eagles throughout August. Practices will generally start between 5:30pm and 6:00pm based on the coach’s schedules.

Once school starts, practices will switch to indoors at Barrington High school & Barrington Middle school 2X/week for all ages. Specific days of the week are determined closer to the start of the season.

We do cheer at tackle football games and those typically start the first week of September.

All cheer teams will compete in RISMA Cheerleading Competition held in October. Our Tiny Mite team is exhibition only, while our other cheer teams will have the chance to advance t0 the Regional competition held in November, and following have the chance to travel to the National Championship in Charlotte, NC which is held December 7-14. More information on these events will be shared closer to the start of the season. *Regionals & Nationals is based on team placement*

If you have any questions about our cheerleading program, please contact Jamie Coughlin ( Cheer Coordinator).

National Pop Warner Cheer History
Pop Warner Spirit teams have participated for several decades on the football sidelines (Pep Squads, Majorettes, etc.); however, cheerleading was not officially introduced until the 1970’s.

Today, thousands of youth participate in Pop Warner Cheerleading and Dance teams around the United States.

The Cheer and Dance Program offers teams a wide range of opportunity for young athletes at all skill levels: Novice, Intermediate and Advanced.

Pop Warner has established one set of spirit rules along with JAMZ, the Pop Warner Education Development Partner and the original developer of the Youth Cheer and Dance Alliance (YCADA).

Together with YCADA, Pop Warner is able to provide online educational courses for its coaches, administrators and judges on team skill levels for Cheer Teams (PW 1, 2, 3 & 4) and for Dance Teams (Pom Performance, Theme Dance & Hip Hop). Pop Warner also offers additional competition opportunities in Sideline Performance Cheer and Skill Games.

With continued education, the Pop Warner Coaching Staff provides basic instruction, training and conditioning for both football games and competition.

Teams participate on the sidelines at football games for home and most away games through to the Pop Warner Super Bowl. In addition to Game Day, teams participate in qualifying spirit events (League and Region) through to a Pop Warner National Championship.

The Pop Warner National Cheer and Dance Championships (started in 1988) are now held in December located in Florida Citrus Sports in Orlando, Florida.
