Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to Northshore Youth Soccer Association (NYSA)!  All great soccer players, young and old, have one thing in common: a safe and supportive environment where they are able to express their passion for the game.  NYSA is committed to providing an atmosphere that supports your child’s development on the field and helping them develop a lifelong love of the game.  To support this process NYSA, a registered 501c3, relies on hundreds of volunteer coaches who have a commitment to continuous education, supportive parents who respect all aspects of the game, and thousands of players who are committed to participating and growing to the best of their abilities.  Playing soccer with NYSA is a great way for your child to stay fit and develop athleticism and coordination while building lasting friendships.

WHAT IS YOUR SERVICE AREA?
As defined by our agreement with Washington Youth Soccer (WYS), NYSA is the sole provider of soccer programs for the Northshore School District and Maltby Elementary.

DO YOU HAVE TO LIVE THE NYSA SERVICE AREA TO PLAY AT NYSA?
No, everyone is welcome to play for a team or participate in camps and clinics at NYSA.  Note: all practices, camps, clinics, and home games will be held within our designated service area.

HOW OLD DO YOU HAVE TO BE TO PLAY SOCCER WITH NYSA?
NYSA offers a variety of programs beginning with U6 all the way through U19.  Our most popular program, fall soccer, breaks players down by age and gender.  To ensure that all players get the necessary time with their coach, can get touches on the ball, and adequate playing time to develop their skills NYSA offers mod-soccer to U6-U12.  By U13 players are participating in traditional 11v11 games on full sided fields.  The chart below shows the birth year of children and what age group they would be in for the 2018-19 season (Fall 2018/Spring 2019)

DOES MY CHILD HAVE TO TRYOUT BEFORE REGISTERING FOR SOCCER?
It depends on the Program you and your child are interested in. For our Recreational (U6-U19) Programs your child does NOT have to tryout. These programs are structured around the high school feeder patterns and players are assigned to teams.  For our competitive level Select (U10-U19) & Premier (U9-U19) Programs, your child is REQUIRED to attend tryouts in order to be eligible for selection.

WHAT IS THE SCHEDULE FOR THE SEASON?
For Recreational Soccer our fall season runs from August until November (teams that advance into the WYS Recreational Cup may play into December. Individual team practice schedules are determined by the coach, but most take place Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday evenings and start between 4:30pm - 7:00 p.m. Game schedules are determined once we have a final number of teams, but most games take place Saturday mornings.

For more detailed information on season start and end times, including information on our Select and Premier programs click here.

CAN I CHOOSE WHICH REC TEAM MY CHILD WILL BE ON?
Although we do accept requests for teammates and coaches, fulfillment of such requests are not guaranteed.  When coaches, players and/or parents start choosing up whole teams, the teams can become unbalanced, which isn’t much fun and defeats the purpose of our recreational program. As an association within WYS, we have strict rules and guidelines we must adhere when forming teams.  One of the benefits of recreational soccer is making new friends, experiencing new coaches and new techniques.

HOW DO I FIND OUT WHICH TEAM MY CHILD IS ON?
Rosters are released to coaches about a week after the Fourth of July.  Shortly after this, coaches will begin notifying families via email and/or phone calls that your child has been placed on their team.  You can also check our website the see which team your child is on as well as view the team roster beginning in mid to late July.

WHAT EQUIPMENT DOES MY CHILD NEED?
All players are required to have shin guards and a water bottle for all age groups.  Soccer cleats (be sure that they do not have the toe cleat found on baseball and football cleats) and a soccer ball are recommended.

DOES MY CHILD NEED A UNIFORM?
For the U6-U8 Recreational teams NYSA provides a jersey for all players to match the colors of the local high school.  Typically teams in this age group will coordinate the purchase of matching shorts and/or socks.  All U9-U19 Recreational teams will need to purchase a uniform as a team.  NYSA has several local providers who offer quality uniforms at various price points to fit any teams budget.

Select and Premier have different requirements for uniforms and information regarding the required uniform will be provided to all accepted players.

WHAT SIZE BALL IS REQUIRED?
U6 - U8: size 3
U10 - U12: size 4
U14 and up: size 5

HOW OFTEN ARE PRACTICES AND WHERE ARE THEY HELD?
For U7 and up Recreational players, practices are held two nights per week typically Monday thru Thursday beginning anywhere from 4:30pm-7:00pm.  Practices for Bothell, Inglemoor, North Creek, and Woodinville Clubs take place at local elementary schools within the high school feeder pattern.  Practices for United Club will be anywhere within the NYSA service area.  Select and Premier teams typically practice 2-3 nights per week and will be located anywhere within the NYSA service area.

U6 players meet one night per week, where games and practice are rolled into the 1 hour session.

WHEN AND WHERE ARE THE GAMES PLAYED?
For NYSA Recreational teams U6 thru U12, teams play intra-league games which are all played at fields within the Northshore School District.  Teams U13 and up play in D2, which consists of teams both within and outside of NYSA.  These teams will play their home games at fields within the Northshore School District and the other half are held at neighboring clubs facilities.  Most games for U7 thru U14 are held on Saturdays beginning at 8:00am and running throughout the day.  Team U15 and up will play a majority of their games on Sundays.

Both Select and Premier teams will play half their games as home teams on local fields and the remainder will be played throughout the Greater Puget Sound area.  Some games may require overnight stays, ferry rides, and extended travel.  Visit the NSC or Greater Seattle Surf website for more information on travel.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE CASE OF INCLEMENT WEATHER?
Field field closures due to rain and snow will be posted to the NYSA website and social media outlets by 3:00pm weekdays and by 6:30am on the weekends.  We continuously monitor the situation with fields and may need to make closures after the stated deadline.  For more detail on our inclement weather policy (including heat, rain/snow, lightning, and air quality) check out or Inclement Weather Policy page in the About Us section of our website.
