West Salem Little League

To promote transparency and fairness within the All-Star Selection process we have implemented a new format this year.

All-Star Coach Selection:

If you are interested in coaching one of the All-Star Teams, please email me and let me know which team. Ideally, we will field a 10U, 11U, and 12U team. We WILL NOT put together a team just because we have the kids for it, meaning, the players chosen are deliberate and on a certain team because they have the skills necessary to compete at that level. Priority will be given to coaches with competitive baseball experience both personally, within little league and past All-Star Coaches. All Coaches and Assistants will be chosen before the tryout. Head Coaches will be selected by a vote of the board. If a coach is a board member they will not vote.

Player Nominations:

All AAA and Major’s coaches will send a list of player names to the league president that they feel are a candidate for one of the All-Star Teams. These players will be sent a letter informing them of the nomination and the tryout date. The players will also receive a commitment letter that will be signed and dated. They will bring this to the tryout.

Tryout Information:

All players nominated will need to attend the tryout to be considered for selection. If a player cannot attend the tryout, they will not play all-stars. There will not be any exceptions to this. The tryout is on May 18th at Walker on Field 1.

Tryout Evaluations:

All AAA and Major’s coaches are being asked to attend the tryout to be evaluators. You all know these players the best and are the most qualified to evaluate skills. Please see the All-Star Criteria document for specific information on what skills you will be evaluating.

Evaluation Criteria:

Fielding: Always consider a player’s versatility, then begin by rating defensive fundamentals. How does the player move to the ball? Watch the footwork when fielding ground balls and fly balls. How does the player field the ball? Are their hands positioned properly, and does the player transfer the ball quickly to their throwing hand. How accurate and strong is the player’s throwing arm? How far does the ball travel, and how well can the player put the throw on target.

Batting: When it comes time to rate offense, look beyond bat-ball contact to determine if the player is a hitter. Regardless of if player hits the ball, look at the position in the batter’s box and body language when the ball is pitched. Does the player show the ability to track the ball to the plate, stay in the batter’s box and/or steps toward the pitcher when swinging, and does not shy away from the ball.

Speed: Speed is important. It can’t be taught, but it can be the difference between a hit and an out. While base-running, sprints, or defense, gauge the player’s reaction time. Look for a player with speed and quick reflexes.

Skill-Level and Ability to Compete: All-Star players should demonstrate proficiency in baseball fundamentals such as hitting, fielding, throwing, and base running. Their ability to contribute positively to the team’s performance is crucial.

Attitude and Hustle: A positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to give their best effort are essential. Players who hustle on and off the field contribute significantly to the team’s success.

Team Spirit and Leadership: All-Star teams thrive when players support and encourage each other. Leaders emerge naturally, motivating their teammates and fostering team unity.

Overall Character, Integrity, and Sportsmanship: Good sportsmanship, honesty, and respect for opponents, coaches, and umpires are vital. Players who exhibit integrity and uphold the values of fair play contribute positively to the team’s reputation.

All-Star Commitment Letter (EXAMPLE):

 All-Star Commitment Acknowledgement

·         I understand the importance of attending practice, and I will have my player at all

practices, games, and scrimmages unless a conflict arises. I understand that the head coach must

be contacted prior to any absences.

·        I understand that the all-star season may run from June 15 through mid-July, and possibly later

into July or August. Further, I understand that if my player cannot be available for both the District and State tournaments, then they may be considered an alternate team member and not a regular team member.

·         I understand that it is the head coach’s decision as to what position each player will play. No one

is guaranteed playing time. Playing time is earned through effort, attitude, and performance in

practices, scrimmages, and games.

·         I understand that the cost of participating on this all-star team will only cover a new shirt, hat,

and pants for my player.

·         I understand that there may be additional costs associated with playing on an all-star team,

such as tournament gate fees, travel expenses, team pictures, etc.

·         I understand that if we advance past the district tournament, the team may require a fundraiser.

to offset expected team travel expenses such as hotel rooms, meals, etc.

·         I understand that being part of this all-star team is a privilege and not a right.

·         I understand that this all-star team is a more intense baseball experience in which my player will

further develop their baseball skills and knowledge of the game. Likewise, I understand that the

values of having fun, developing friendships and developing a love for the game are still

emphasized.

·         I have read all the above and understand the expectations of this Commitment Letter.
