Shaler Area Elementary Basketball Association Philosophy and Objectives

Statement of Philosophy

Athletics are a vital part of the educational process.  We believe that the educational process encompasses the time before and after the normal school day and athletics provides an avenue for personal development.  Shaler Area School District has a strong tradition of student and community support for all of the athletic teams.  The primary purposes of youth athletics are to have fun, develop a healthy mind and body, to instill the values of self-discipline and teamwork, and to develop a sense of school and community.

 Goals and Objectives

BEING A GOOD TEAMMATE— We will stress the importance of being a good teammate.  Every child wants to succeed and will try his/her hardest.  It is important that each child knows he/she has the full support of teammates.  Equally, each child must know it is his/her job to support all teammates as well.

BEING SUCCESSFUL— Our society is very competitive.  We do not always win, but we succeed in our pursuit to do so. It is important to remember that these are children still learning how to compete and manage their perceived successes and failures.

TO DEVELOP SPORTSMANSHIP— We will stress sportsmanship.  The kids will learn the importance of treating opponents, officials and opposing coaches with the same respect and courtesy shown toward their teammates.  They will take their lead from the adults.  Please set good examples.

TO HAVE FUN—It is necessary for athletes to enjoy participation and competition, and to acknowledge all of the positive personal awards to be derived from athletics.  Fun should be the number one reason kids play sports.

EFFORT—A tangible goal for every game and practice is to work as hard as possible.  If this is achieved, the children will learn it often leads to success and having fun in the process.
