EVALUATIONS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the purpose of player evaluations?
Player evaluations are an important part of the team formation/draft process to help us achieve Marana Little League’s objectives of placing players at the appropriate skill level (division), achieving team parity, and compliance with Little League International rules. It also helps create a memorable, fun, and fair playing environment for all players. Evaluations are not a tryout--all registered players are placed on a team regardless of skill level.
What will evaluations entail?
The evaluations will cover fielding, throwing, catching (fly balls), hitting, running and optionally pitching and catching for ages 9 and above. The evaluations are organized by the league player agent and run by the Marana Little League board. Coaches who have volunteered to coach a minors or majors division and who have completed a background check prior to evaluations will be invited to come and help evaluate players.
My child is 6 years old, why do they have to do evaluations?
For Coach Pitch, Mini Minors and AA divisions, the Marana Little League board uses player evaluations during team formation to ensure an optimal competitive balance between teams. This helps create a memorable, fun, and fair playing environment for all players. Evaluations are not a tryout--all registered players are placed on a team regardless of skill level.
What dates will evaluations be held?
For the 2025 season, evaluations are planned for the week of February 10th. Specific dates to be provided early February.
Where will evaluations be held?
At Ora Mae Harn Park.
What times will evaluations be held?
The specific time that your player will need to arrive at the park will be provided to you via email by the Marana Little League Player agent.
My child's age is incorrect in the PDF Evaluation list.
Ages shown correspond to little league player age, which is sometimes different than the actual age of the player. Little league age charts are provided here for Baseball and Softball.
How long will evaluations take?
Players should arrive 20 minutes early to check-in, and warm-up, prior to being called into their scheduled evaluation time. Age groups will be split into 30 minute - 45 minute (depending on age) ‘cohorts’, of roughly 10 - 15 players being evaluated at a time. Players can leave, immediately after completing the last station (running)
What should players bring?
Players should bring water, glove, bat, baseball hat, batting helmet, and cleats, and wear baseball pants. For league age 5 - 8 year olds, there is no need to bring catcher's gear, as we will not be evaluating specifically for the catcher or pitcher position in this age group. For league age players 9 and above will have an option to be evaluated as catcher and pitcher near the end of the evaluation process. If kids have catcher’s gear, and want to bring it, they can do so, but gear will also be provided by the league.
What should I do when I arrive at Ora Mae?
There will be a registration table near the snack bar. You will need to check-in at the registration table, where each player will be provided a bib corresponding to their evaluation number, and safety pins to attach the bib to the players shirt. Players can then proceed to field #1 to warm-up prior to being called over for evaluations.
What if my child cannot make the scheduled evaluation time?
Email the player agent ([email protected]) and we will do our best to find another time that works.
I volunteered to be a head coach, and my child will be playing on my team. Does my child still need to do evaluations?
Yes. All players league ages registered for Coach Pitch/Mini Minor divisions and up are required to attend evaluations.
