Rookie Softball (6U) Girls

1. Games are 3 innings or ~60 minutes (whichever comes first)
2. Games are not scored & played with 11” dimpled softballs (machine softballs)
3. For fielding practice, 11” softballs are used
4. Bases will be set at 50’
5. Pitching machine will be used and set at approximately 36’ from home plate
6. The game is non-competitive and there are no outs.
7. During each inning, both teams shall bat their entire lineup
8. Batting: Each player should receive up to 5 ‘strikes’ from the pitching machine. A swing and miss or pitch within strike zone counts as a strike. If the player hits the ball into fair territory, they should run to first base. If no ‘hits’ during machine pitch, the player shall hit the ball of a tee and run to first base. Adherence to the 5 machine pitches is key to maximizing game experience for players, coaches, and parents.
9. Baserunning:
-All base running is 1 base at a time. There are no ‘extra base hits’. Only exception is the last batter who hits a home run’ and clears the bases to end the half inning.
10. No bunting, stealing, or tagging up.
11. Fielding: All players should play in the field. There is no catcher. Coaches should attempt to position players in actual positions (1B, SB, SS, 3B, Pitcher, and 4 outfielders). An additional pitcher can be added. Coaches should rotate players each inning and if needed, during the inning, to ensure all players get the opportunity to make a defensive play during the game. Defense should initially throw the ball to 1st base. As knowledge of game increases, coaches can introduce more advanced skills such as fielder’s choice and throwing ball hit to the outfield to the cutoff.
12. Coaches are encouraged to be on the field during game play to provide instruction.
