LEICESTER LITTLE LEAGUE SAFETY MANUAL

ASAP – What it is?
In 1995, ASAP (A Safety Awareness Program) was introduced with the goal of re-emphasizing the position of Safety Officer “to create awareness, through education and information, of the opportunities to provide a safer environment for kids and all participants of Little League Baseball.” The ASAP program shares the best safety ideas of volunteers, and has been extremely successful.  This manual is offered as a tool to place some important information at the fingertips of managers, coaches, and other league volunteers.
Leicester Little League
Safety Code
• Every year the league will conduct a survey of the fields and surrounding facilities. Leicester LL Survey form must be filled out by the Safety Officer and presented to the Board.
• On-deck batters are not permitted (except in Junior/Senior/Big League Division) either inside or outside of the field.
• The Catcher must wear a catcher’s helmet with a throat guard in warming up pitchers. This applies between innings and in the bull-pen during a game and also in practice.
• Players must not wear watches, rings, pins, or metallic items during games and practices.
• Parents of players who wear glasses should be encouraged to provide “safety glasses.”
• At no time should “horse play” be permitted on the playing field.
• During sliding practice, bases should not be strapped down or anchored.
• Except when runners are returning to a base, head-first slides are not permitted.
• Batters and base runners must wear Little League approved protective helmets with
• Optional facemasks during practice and games. Junior/Senior/Big League players will wear batting helmets.
• Equipment should be inspected regularly for the condition of the equipment as well as for the proper fit. Remember, you know your team’s equipment better that anyone else.
• All pre-game warm-ups should be performed within the confines of the playing field and not in areas that are frequented by, and thus endangering spectators (i.e., playing catch, pepper, swinging bats, etc.)
• During warm-up drills players should be spaced so that no one is endangered by wild throws or missed catches.
• During practice and games, all players should be alert and watching the batter on each pitch.
• Responsibility for keeping bats and loose equipment off the field of play should be that of a player assigned for this purpose or the team’s manager and coaches.
• Only players, managers, coaches, and umpires are permitted on the playing
field or in the dugout during games and practice sessions.
• All team equipment should be stored within the team dugout, or behind screens, and not within the area defined by the umpires as “in play.”
• Fields should be inspected for frequent holes, damage, stones, glass, and other foreign objects.
• One adult coach must remain at the bench at all times.
• Metal cleats are not allowed in the Tee-Ball, AA, AAA and Major Division.
Major, Jr., Sr. League players will wear
     mouth guards.
• A copy of the Safety Plan has been distributed to all volunteers.
