SUMMER is coming so you know what is next. U23 Summer league time. This league is very competitive and we are looking for players who are serious and are eager to get ready for college soccer. 

Long Island Soccer Coach Artemio Ernesto Phan

Born On May 25, 1947 in Lima Peru, Artemio Ernesto Phan has since found a love for soccer at a young age. Having graduated high school in 1964 he went on to study in Uruguay at the Technical Institute of South America Confederations of YMCA’s.

It was then where he made a decision to be so involved in sports. He was not only a good soccer player as a young man but as the years went on he played with and against some very good South American soccer players. The education he received led him to be a supervisor for the Social and Cultural department of recreation in Uruguay, then became the Director for youth and Minors in Argentina by 1968. At the end of 1968 he was transferred to work in the YMCA in Santiago Chile, as their Director of youth education department for physical education and social and cultural department. He spent 2 years there and then was sent back home to Lima Peru to become the Director of the Physical education Department for the YMCA.

Ernesto served as the executive secretary and general coordinator for the Pan American games of Health, physical education and Sports of the YMCA’s in Bolivia, Ecuador, Chile, Columbia, and Venezuela. In 1975 he then became the Industrial relations Supervisor for recreations and sports in Centromin, Peru. He was dealing with all the supervisions of the Clubs and hotel activities. In 1983 he became the assistant to sports production and broadcasting for Channel 4 American Television. This is where his television debut came from as he went around South America broadcasting of all major sporting events that took place. He interviewed many great athletes including Pele during a South American Copa Libertadores.

As his employment took him to so many different place around South America he was also playing at the same time. He was being coached by some of the best coach this beautiful game had to offer such as: Roque Gaston Maspoli the coach for the Uruguay national team and world cup champions in 1950. Fernando Riera the Chile National team coach for World Cup 1962. Ernesto trained at River Plate in 1970 while in Argentina and was trained by Waldeir Pereira a world Cup Champion in 1958.

In 1984 he then came to the United States along with his family, wife Marcela and son Alvaro Phan. Ernesto, is how most people know him now, at first was starting to get to know the United States and the way soccer was being played here. After watching his son play his youth days at the Brentwood soccer club, it was not until Alvaro Phan made the move to Northport in 1992 where Ernesto made the choice to start coaching the youth age group. He became the trainer for the Northport cow harbor Titans at the ages of U14 thru U18 team that won many leagues, chase cups and traveled to top level tournaments. In 1994 He was part of the Long Island Rough Riders organization for the men’s teams as their international liaison, and then became the Assistant coach for the Long Island lady Riders who were two time National USISL women’s Champions. He was also a member of the Long Island Referee Association, and State Referee Association. Ernesto was on the Board of Director on the Northport Cow Harbor soccer club as well a Director of youth Development there. Served as an active member of the Long Island Coaching academy, was the GU17 Long Island Select (ODP) team for 5 years and coached a team that went to Aberdeen and won the tournament in remembrance to 911.

In 2006-2010 he became a coach at Nassau Community College where they won a couple of Regional titles, and made the NJCAA tournament. He then took charge for coaching the showcase team for Score at the Shore, one of the best College showcases at the time. It was that start of success to bring college eligible soccer players together and be able to play against the top teams in the country that have made him a success. He is now the Technical Director for Score FC, where the teams have been very successful on getting the players to play at a top level. Bring his knowledge and expertise on dissecting the game and bring a new philosophy to our youth has had a great impact on the way the Score Fc teams play.
