2024 LYA Softball Junior Umpire Training Program Details
Training Schedule: We are happy to have our Umpire in Chief Dan Yarnall and Senior Umpire Bob Byerly teaching the training sessions again this year. The first session is expected to be held at West Whiteland Firehouse. The subsequent sessions will be held outside at one of the Exton Little League softball fields (weather permitting). All info will be communicated through TeamSnap. Additionally, District 28 hosts two umpire training sessions each year. You are welcome to attend those also. Once the District announces the locations and dates, we'll post them in TeamSnap.
1st Session: February 10th, 12pm - West Whiteland Firehouse
2nd Session: February 18th, 1pm Exton LL Ship Field
3rd Session: February 24, 12pm Exton LL Ship Field
4th-6th Sessions: March 2, 9th & 16th - Time TBD - Exton LL Ship Field
Additional District 28 Umpire training sessions - TBD
New trainees are expected to attend as many sessions as possible to help ensure their success on the field during the season.
Age Requirement: Must be 13 years old or older. Adults always welcome.
Time Commitment & Scheduling during season: LYA Softball starts on April 1st and games will run through the first week of June. A schedule of available games will be posted in TeamSnap every two weeks. You will mark every game you would like to work. Then, Chris Esposito (our umpire assignor) will assign two umpires to each game and will communicate once the assignments have been made. Two umpires will be assigned to every game at either the plate or in the field. You are welcome to work as much as your schedule allows.
Pay: You will be paid for the games you worked every other Friday via Venmo. Rates are set between $30-$50 and are dependent on the job you worked; i.e. plate, field, division of softball game, etc.
Uniform: After a few training sessions, LYA will provide each Junior Umpire with a uniform shirt, hat, and ball bag with plate brush. To complete your uniform, you will need to wear your own grey colored pants (no sweats or leggings) and dark colored shoes (no cleats).
