Limits on Outdoor Gatherings - Updated April 2

* The limit on the number of people attending general outdoor gatherings has been increased to 200 people, this includes sports competitions and practices

Outdoor Gatherings

  • General outdoor gatherings must be limited to 50 people and social distancing must be practiced.
  • There is no limit for outdoor gatherings for wedding ceremonies, funerals, memorial services, religious activities, or political activities.
  • Outdoor wedding receptions are limited to 150 individuals.
  • Outdoor sports practices and competitions may exceed the general outdoor gathering limit under specific exceptions (see below)
  • Outdoor performances at outdoor entertainment centers, including movie theaters, performing arts centers, and other concert venues, are limited to a number that ensures that all people can remain six feet apart, but no more than 150 people. Outdoor performances in an outside area adjacent to an indoor entertainment centers must be limited to 35 percent of the facility's indoor capacity, but no more than 150 people, not including staff.
  • Large venues, including sports and entertainment venues, with a fixed seating capacity of 5,000 or more may host events at 15 percent capacity outdoors; the 15 percent capacity limit excludes participants, such as athletes and performers, and staff, such as coaches and ushers, but include patrons and other members of the public.

Organized Sports

Practices and competitions for indoor and outdoor organized sports may resume in accordance with health and safety protocols and limits on attendance described below.  As of Friday, March 19, outdoor interstate youth sports competitions are also permitted to resume

Gathering Limits for Sports Practices and Competitions

  • Practices and competitions are limited by the general indoor gatherings limit of 25 people and the general outdoor gatherings limit of 50 people but there are exceptions, described below:
  • For non-collegiate, non-professional sports in venues with fewer than 5,000 seats, the general gathering limits can be exceeded if the only people present are those necessary for practice and competition, such as athletes, coaches, and referees, as well as up to two parents or guardians per athlete under the age of 21. No other spectators may attend. The total number of people for indoor events is capped at 35 percent of the room's capacity, but no more than 150 people.
  • Any spectators must follow guidance from the Department of Health regarding sports activities, including wearing a mask, observing social distancing, and staying home if sick. Staff, parents, guardians, and visitors are required to wear face coverings at practices and games. Athletes are encouraged to wear masks during downtime, but not during physical activity.

Local school districts, collegiate conferences, and other sports operators may impose additional restrictions on spectators.

Facilities and participants must also abide by a number of health and safety protocols outlined in the Department of Health's Guidance for Sports Activities, such as screenings for athletes, coaches, and staff; limitations on equipment sharing; and requirements for disinfecting and sanitizing surfaces and equipment.
