Volunteering
Almaden Little League (A.L.L) is an all-volunteer league and parent volunteers are essential to the success of our league. The Board of Directors, Managers, Umpires, Snack Shack are all parent and community volunteers. Volunteer duties include:
- Managers (Head Coaches) and Assistant Coaches (All Divisions): Responsible for their players, parents & coaching staff. Leads practices & games, ensures good sportsmanship and assigning below volunteers to fill shifts per game.
- Field Prep / Field Take Down (All Divisions): The home team sets up the field and away team take down the field.
- Field set-up includes wetting down the field, dragging the field, putting out the bases, putting out the pitchers mound (AA only) / home run fence (AAA only), chalking the field (baselines, batters boxes and pitchers circle (softball only)). A two parent team can typically get this done in 30 minutes and will start 60 to 45 minutes prior to the game, while the kids warm in the outfield.
- Field take down (for the last game of the day per site, all Divisions): includes dragging the field, putting away the bases and pitchers mound (AA only)/home run fence (AAA only) and adding dirt back to pitchers mound (AAA, Majors, Juniors). A two parent team can typically get this done in less than 30 minutes after the game.
- Snack Shack (All Divisions except Juniors): Every team is assigned specific shifts to operate the snack shack that are typically 90minutes to 2 hours long, and encompasses all the games within a slot (e.g., Team 1 is responsible for 9a snack shack at Greystone Park until all the 9a games at this field are complete). This involves set-up, food prep, cashless purchase handling, and tear down depending on the shift. The snack shack is by far the most popular shift and is usually what all our kids remember during the season. It's also a main fundraiser for the league which carries significant importance and helps keep registrations as low as we can. Each shift requires two adults. Children are allowed to help (and LOVE to do so) with adult supervision.
- Umpiring (AA, AAA, Majors, Juniors, 8U, 10U and 12U): We rely on volunteer adult umpires to help our season run smoothly for the kids to have a great game experience. You'll receive training and its also a great way to learn the game and teach kids empathy, as they see their parents try to do their best to call the game.
- AA/8U - each teams is required to provide one umpire and will ump their own teams games (except playoffs).
- AAA, Majors baseball - teams are assigned responsibility for other teams games and requires 2 umpires. (e.g., 16 game season = each team responsible for umpiring 8 games).
- 10U/12U/14U softball - teams are assigned responsibility for other teams games and requires at least 1 umpire, but we try to get 2 for each game.
- Juniors baseball - umpires are handled by the district through a tool called Arbiter.
- Scoreboard (AAA, Majors): Home team keeps score on the scoreboard at Greystone Park. Training is provided. Requires 1 adult or responsible teenager.
- GameChanger - Stats keeping (AAA, Majors, Juniors baseball and 8u, 10u, 12u 14u softball): Home team uses GameChanger app to keep the official scorekeeper for all games. GameChanger allows family member who cannot attend the game to follow along with their relative’s game. Training is provided. Requires 1 adult.
There are several other events the league holds throughout the year that require volunteer support in which the league will also reach out seeking support including but limited to: Opening Day, Tournaments that Almaden Little League Hosts, etc.
Volunteer Buy-out. Almaden Little League DOES NOT offer a volunteering buy-out at this time. Volunteering is fun, a great way to build community and is the best way to support your child / all the kids participating in Little League have the best possible experience. Help out!
