Westwood Little League Parade & Opening Day

Saturday, April 27th

Arrival:  Westwood Little League baseball players  and Westwood Youth Softball players should assemble at Hanlon Elementary between 8:30-8:45 a.m. Gay Street will close at 8:50 a.m. We strongly encourage you to park (and walk your child to Hanlon)  If you are dropping off an older child the latest we suggest dropping off your child is 8:45am. Once they arrive at Hanlon, players should report to their age division zone to meet their coach and teammates. We will have parent and high school volunteers directing players to their team and division.

Parade Route: The parade begins promptly at 9:00 a.m.  The route is Gay Street to Pine Lane to School Street to East Street ending at Morrison Baseball Field.  Please note roads in the area will be closed from 8:50 a.m. to approximately 9:25 a.m.

Parade Order:  Parade is led by a Westwood Fire Truck then by baseball and softball age divisions:

  • Zone K - K-ball will lead off the parade.  Team order will be decided at Hanlon.

  • Zone 1 - Rookie (1st grade) and 1st and 2nd grade softball - Team coached by John Techiera will lead this zone in the parade.

  • Zone 2 - Instructional (2nd grade) Team coached by Chris Coppens will lead this zone in the parade

  • Zone 3 - International (3rd grade) and 3rd and 4th and 5th grade softball - Team coached by Marc Pezzuto will lead this zone in the parade.

  • Zone MINORS - Minors Division and Grades 5-8 softball teams - Team coached by Mark Jessup will lead this zone in the parade.

  • Zone MAJORS - Majors Division - Team coached by Peter Cahill will lead this zone in the parade then Westwood Police Car ends parade.

Parent Walkers from Hanlon: Parents are welcome to walk the parade route. However,  please wait on the sidewalk outside the Hanlon Field fence.  Once your child’s team enters Gay Street, you may then join the procession but please stay on the sidewalks while the players walk on the street.  Our focus is to minimize confusion and ensure that everyone exits the field in a safe, orderly and timely manner.

Arrival at Morrison:  Volunteers will greet the marchers and assist ONLY baseball and softball teams, along with their coaches, onto the field.  Due to the large number of players, volunteers and guests already on the field, we cannot allow other family members, including parents and siblings, or strollers onto the field.  All families are welcome outside the fence in the softball field outfield. Please know that the players  will be closely supervised by coaches and volunteers .

Ceremony/Events on Morrison Field - There will be a short ceremony to officially open the Westwood LIttle League season.
Chloe Goodman, a Westwood High School senior and former Westwood Youth Softball player, will sing the National Anthem.
After a few opening remarks, Westwood resident and military veteran Sean Quinn will throw out the first pitch.

Activities/Refreshments: Will be available after the completion of the opening ceremony.

FREE: Activities include face-painting, temporary tattoos, Run the Bases, Kick and Score Soccer, Baseball Bean Bag toss, Boston Stilt walkers, and Silly Willy the Clown balloon artist.  Complimentary Dunkin’ Donuts coffee/donuts and Showcase Cinemas Popcorn will also be available while supplies last. Various Westwood community organization tables for raffles, merchandise and information.

Parking: Parking will be very limited due to East Street Bridge and Washington Street area construction.  We strongly encourage those that can walk to the event to please do so. If parking near the event,  we ask that you please be courteous to the local businesses and neighbors in the area. Westwood Police will be posting no parking signs on one side of Gay Street and on both sides of Pine Lane and School Street by the playground. Please obey these signs. The fire truck and little leaguers need the extra space to process through.  Note that there will be no parking available at Morrison Field along East Street as these will be reserved for vendors, special guests, and official town vehicles.

What if it rains?  The event is rain (light in nature) or shine.
