NEW MANDATORY BACKGROUND CHECK PROCEDURE

Effective, January 1, 2022, all administrators, employees, and regular volunteers in California ARE REQUIRED to have a one-time background check as approved by the California Department of Justice to exclude individuals with a history of child abuse. This form of background check requires LIVESCAN fingerprinting, and the state's “Mandated Reporter” course provided by the Office of Child Abuse Prevention in the State Department of Social Services.

To clarify, a REGULAR VOLUNTEER is a person who has direct contact with children 16 hours a month or 32 hours per year, which applies to most coaches, referees, team parents, and board members who spend 2 or more hours on the field weekly.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR POP WARNER VOLUNTEERS:

Before completing the fingerprint/background check (Live scan), all board members, coaches, and volunteers must register with and complete the state’s required course in child abuse and neglect identification & reporting. The training consists of a 2-hour online “Mandated Reporter” course provided by the Office of Child Abuse Prevention in the State Department of Social Services.

PLEASE NOTE:

You will still need to complete the course AND the live scan fingerprinting even if you have already done so with another organization. If you are a current or potential FPW volunteer, our board of directors will be coordinating the league's Livescan representative to visit at a time and location to be determined, at which time you will be required to fill out the application and provide your fingerprints. Once this has been done, you will no longer need to update your Livescan or background check ever again. Returning volunteers will simply be re-applied and updated by the league each season.
